Sprint, the third-biggest U.S. wireless operator, announced on Tuesday that it has filed a lawsuit with a federal court in the U.S. District of Columbia in an effort to block AT&T’s planned $39 billion acquisition of T-Mobile USA from Deutsche Telekom.

Sprint Vice Presidente of Litigation Susan Z. Haller said: “Sprint opposes AT&T’s proposed takeover of T-Mobile. With today’s legal action, we are continuing that advocacy on behalf of consumers and competition, and expect to contribute our expertise and resources in proving that the proposed transaction is illegal.”

here the official Statement :

Sprint Files Suit to Block Proposed AT&T and T-Mobile Transaction

WASHINGTON (BUSINESS WIRE), September 06, 2011 – Sprint Nextel [NYSE:S] today brought suit against AT&T, Inc., AT&T Mobility, Deutsche Telekom and T-Mobile seeking to block the proposed acquisition as a violation of Section 7 of the Clayton Act. The lawsuit was filed in federal court in the District of Columbia as a related case to the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) suit against the proposed acquisition.

“Sprint opposes AT&T’s proposed takeover of T-Mobile,” said Susan Z. Haller, vice president-Litigation, Sprint. “With today’s legal action, we are continuing that advocacy on behalf of consumers and competition, and expect to contribute our expertise and resources in proving that the proposed transaction is illegal.”

Sprint’s lawsuit focuses on the competitive and consumer harms which would result from a takeover of T-Mobile by AT&T. The proposed takeover would:

Harm retail consumers and corporate customers by causing higher prices and less innovation.

Entrench the duopoly control of AT&T and Verizon, the two “Ma Bell” descendants, of the almost one-quarter of a trillion dollar wireless market. As a result of the transaction, AT&T and Verizon would control more than three-quarters of that market and 90 percent of the profits.

Harm Sprint and the other independent wireless carriers. If the transaction were to be allowed, a combined AT&T and T-Mobile would have the ability to use its control over backhaul, roaming and spectrum, and its increased market position to exclude competitors, raise their costs, restrict their access to handsets, damage their businesses and ultimately to lessen competition.

Thanks again to our friends from Pocketnow, we can enjoy viewing the 3 different models for each mayor carrier that will carry the new Samsung Galaxy S II. T-Mobile, Sprint and AT&T are the lucky ones (Verizon Wireless decided not to carry it). The T-Mobile version is like a giant Nexus S. The Sprint one is less rounded than the T-Mo’s variant. AT&T decided to keep the original design of the Galaxy S II. Remember that the new Samsung Galaxy S II, aka Hercules just passed FCC with 850/1900/1700-2100 3G bands.

More information soon.

HTC just posted on its Facebook page that next August, it will start rolling out to unlock bootloaders of the newest devices like Sensation 4G and EVO 3D for Sprint. . The process is two-fold: first, HTC pushes a “maintenance release” to the phones, but this won’t mean a thing until step two — releasing the actual unlocking tool — is complete in early September.

“We wanted to provide an update on HTC’s progress with bringing bootloader unlocking to our newest phones. We know how excited some of you are for this capability, and we’ve put significant resources behind making this change as soon as possible. While we wish we could flip a simple switch and unlock all bootloaders across our device portfolio, this is actually a complex challenge that requires a new software build and extensive testing to deliver the best possible customer experience.

We’re thrilled to announce today that software updates to support bootloader unlocking will begin rolling out in August for the global HTC Sensation, followed by the HTC Sensation 4G on T-Mobile USA and the HTC EVO 3D on Sprint. We’re in the testing phase for the unlocking capability now, and we expect it to be fully operational by early September for devices that have received the software updates. We’ll continue rolling out the unlocking capability over time to other devices as part of maintenance releases and new shipments.

HTC continues its commitment to unlocking bootloaders and supporting the developer community. Because of the importance of this community to us, please expect an update on this about every few weeks as we make progress toward launch. Thank you for your patience and continued support!”

Now Sprint is waling to pay all the fess ( up to 175 US$) you will be charged if you leave T-Mobile and switch to them. Even they will avoid the ETF if you leave Sprint and return to T-Mobile if the acquisition is not approved.

”Do you have the feeling the AT&T/T-Mobile won’t end with a ‘Happily Ever After?’,”… what you think?

This promotion will initially be aimed at business customers and evaluated for future use with non-business accounts.

Sprint does not want the be way behind if the proccess passes FCC and be the third in place, only controlling less than 20% of the wireless industry. That is why Sprint has just used was this ad, mocking T-Mobile’s own recent ads featuring a brunette in a pink dress — mocking AT&T and Verizon as old, white balding men.

The ad, which features a cigar-smoking man in a similar pink dress, used the tagline “It makes sense if you don’t think about it,” and complains the deal will result in less innovation and higher prices. However, the ad — funded in part by Sprint and supported by groups like Public Knowledge and Media Access Project.

AT&T this morning heads before the Senate Subcommittee on Antitrust, Competition Policy and Consumer Rights to defend their planned acquisition of T-Mobile.

We will wait to ear you AT&T.

Consumer Reports is out with its latest survey of cell phone service by its members, and AT&T is now ranked as the worst in the country, as well as the worst in Houston. T-Mobile is in 4th place.. what happened with you T-Mo?

“We take this seriously and we continually look for new ways to improve the customer experience. The fact is wireless customers have choices and a record number of them chose AT&T in the third quarter, significantly more than our competitors. Hard data from independent drive tests confirms AT&T has the nation’s fastest mobile broadband network with our nearest competitor 20 percent slower on average nationwide and our largest competitor 60 percent slower on average nationwide. And, our dropped call rate is within 1/10 of a percent – the equivalent of just one call in a thousand – of the industry leader.”

What about cellphone:

The January issue also ranks smartphones and traditional cell phones, sorted by carrier. At the top of the list for smartphones:

• Apple’s iPhone 4 and Samsung’s Captivate tie for first place at AT&T with 76 points

• Motorola’s Droid X and Samsung’s Fascinate tie for tops at Verizon with 75 points

• Samsung’s Epic 4G for Sprint, with 76 points

• Samsung’s Vibrant for T-Mobile, 76 points
