According to Android Software engineer Dave Sparks, T-Mobile G1 users wont be seeing any more updates beyond the current Android Cupcake 1.5 software. According to sources, the HTC G1 device does not have enough internal flash memory to support any of the new software updates, such as Dounut (Android 2.0). The T-Mobile G1 was the first Android device released in the world, and until now continues to be the single most sold Android device on the market. With the HTC Magic (G2, or MyTouch 3G) having recently broken the 1 million sold mark, Android hardware is drastically improving and expanding, along with significant upgrades in software, not to mention some incredible additions to the Android Applications Market.

Or is this all just a scam to get T-Mobile customers to move on to the myTouch 3G and other Android devices….let the conspiracy theories begin!

T-Mobile G1 users, let us know how you feel in the comments! We wouldn’t be all that thrilled if we were you.

Via EngadgetMobile

Update Via EngadgetMobile: We’ve received a statement directly from T-Mobile on the matter, saying “We plan to continue working with Google to introduce future software updates to the T-Mobile G1. Reports to the contrary are inaccurate.” It’s unclear whether those are just going to be security and stability updates to 1.5 or whether we’ll see wholesale new versions like Donut and beyond, but for the sake of G1 owners everywhere, we’re hoping it’s the latter.

He said the follow-up device to the T-Mobile G1 will be out in early summer..( means now?) and details of the release would come later this month.

Brodman: “We are really excited about that. We have no more specific details at this time, but wanted to say we remain very committed to the Android platform and are excited about taking this next step.”

Brodman said the device will run the so-called “cupcake” version of the operating system, which is currently rolling out to T-Mobile G1 subscribers. He wouldn’t say much else about the device, but it sounds like it has a high likelihood of coming from a new handset partner, like Motorola Morrison, Samsung Big Foot or Gallaxi, rather than from HTC, which manufactured the original T-Mobile G1.

Brodman: “We’ll have multiple new Android devices?from multiple partners?this year.”

T-Mobile’s brand on Android: The original G1 device was predominately a Google product, and didn’t include much of T-Mobile’s brand. Brodman said that will change. “My perspective is that each device will be focused on a different consumer segment? There’s a couple of paths you can take: You can partner close with Google, and it has Google brand sprinkled throughout, and then there’s the carrier and handset initiative?and non-Google based innovation. We are going to take both paths to market, and you’ll see different elements sprinkled in.”

?T-Mobile on netbooks: Brodman said netbooks are an emerging space for the company and are looking at working with partners over the next several months. Separately, they are seeing several partners embed Android into hybrid devices and into netbooks. Brodman said that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll choose Android, but a mobile-centric platform, like Andorid, makes sense for mobile devices.

?The G1 as a success: T-Mobile’s parent Deutsche Telekom said T-Mobile sold more than 1 million G1s during its first six months on the market. Is that a success? Brodman: “I think for a first generation product?with first-generation hardware and software?and for a period of time it was in the market, it was good. We didn’t launch the G1 for the sake of making the G1 the most successful mobile phone ever built? It was about plays well beyond the G1. From that standpoint,…it was pretty good as a starting point.”

?Will T-Mobile pick up Nokia’s N97?: Brodman said they are not very interested in Nokia’s flagship N97 device, which hits the market this month. Brodman: “Some of the Nokia/Symbian devices have a lot of functionality, but they are quite expensive and Symbian does not have a lot of traction in the U.S. While Nokia is a strong partner, we haven’t had a lot of demand for N-series products to date.

Reason number 4, carriers want an iPhone competitor, is debatable because I think we are going to see many more Android devices that do just that. Since there is nothing solid as far as announcements go I will leave that one alone.

Reason 2: In reason 2 Jason states the following:

So the ultimate device should combine a touchscreen and a qwerty keyboard, right? The G1 makes a noble attempt, but it’s flip-down keyboard is awkward and not very effective. The Palm Pre represents the first effective fusion of the two, although it’s not perfect either. The Pre keyboard is even a little smaller than the BlackBerry Curve, so it will be tough for people with large fingers to use. Nevertheless, it’s the first smartphone to effectively combine a full touchscreen with an effective qwerty thumboard. Other devices will likely follow its lead.

By Cnet :

While the G1 may be a bit of a clunky device, the keyboard is one part that actually shines on the device. It has great spacing, six full rows of keys in an offset QWERTY format just like your PC, assignable shortcuts to just about EVERY key to make navigation on the device extremely efficient, and good feedback so you know when a key is pressed. I am a QWERTY keyboard fan and have tested many, many of these and have to say the G1 keyboard is one of the most efficient keyboards that lets me fly during text entry.

Now with the 1.5 cupcake update you get an on-screen keyboard with haptic feedback to go along with the fantastic G1 keyboard so you get the best of both worlds and I argue that the G1 is the first smartphone to effectively combine a capacitive touchscreen with an effective thumboard. Have you played with the Palm Pre keyboard? It is way too cramped and is not even close to being one of the best keyboards out there. As soon as BlackBerry brings a touch screen to their QWERTY keyboard devices they will probably set the bar here too so the Pre is far from the ultimate in this case.

Reason 1: The Palm Pre is not the first multi-tasking smartphone out there since Windows Mobile and S60 have done it for years. If you want to see someone doing it more elegantly, then again take a look at the Google Android device running on the G1. The G1 has the best background notification system on a smartphone and also supports true multi-tasking. You can simply press and hold the home button to easily jump between the current six running applications as well and it does this with a cool fuzzy background/clear pop-up method. This is just like an Alt-Tab experience and closely models a PC multi-tasking experience.

It will be interesting to see how the Palm Pre does as it launches this weekend, but I have to say I am definitely not as optimistic as Jason at this time. Do you agree that the G1 is strong in these areas or is the Palm Pre the new leader?

Souce

Not bad company to be with considering Blackberry sold a number of devices with a recent Verizon promotion and that the iPhone is well, the iPhone. We’re taking this to mean that the people want Android and if given the opportunity to use more dynamic Android devices, they would. Android is currently the underdog but watch out, when we get more devices, we’ll surely shoot up the standings.
