T-Mobile will introduce Cameo

By: T-Marco October 5th, 2008

T-Mobile soon will introduce a new service and a new device for its subscribers. It is not a phone, it is not a Bluetooth headset. What is it? A Picture frame with a sim card buit in. Back on January, Parrot announced the new DF7700, a digital picture frame with a GSM sim card in it. T-Mobile USA soon will offer this service. For 10 dollars per month add it in your account, you will get a new simcard with a number.

You will send a picture message to that number and automatically,  your photo will show up on the frame. We don’t k now if T-mobile will use the Parrot picture frame, but we sure know T-Mobile will call it CAMEO.  The picture frame will be purchased for 100 dollars.

Stay tuned for more information.

[...] Whether or not people will pay $120/year for this service is debatable. Similar services are available via Wi-Fi connections and even email, but the masses haven’t adopted the idea. This is a little different, because it leverages the ubiquitous camera-enabled mobile phone. The fees are steep though and it remains to be see how good the frame is on it’s own. Either way, this is a fun extension of digital frames as they currently stand. [via CellPhone Signal] [...]

For those who ditch out on the subscription, the Cameo is still a standard digital picture frame, running at 720 x 480 and supporting various flash cards and mini USB storage. So is it practical? I think this kind of service will has a limitation on size of photo taken by your mobile phone and sent it to T-Mobile for their on ward processing, unless T-Mobile is willing to come out with a dedicated client to do it and not relying on MMS. 300KB in size is only supported by mms ver 1.2 onward. I wonder how good the quality of the photo will be in this case.
Another concern to me is cost of a separate photo frame required at home. To me, to use my existing laptop as a simple photo frame while I am in biz. trip is more an valid solution to me.
Check it out how can it be done at http://ngnlive.blogspot.com/2008/11/how-to-use-your-netbook-as-digital.html
Of course I posted photos of my family, not the young lady there. :)

Now that the price has dropped to $40 purchase and $2/Month, I may pick one up for my parents in Wisconsin. Then we could send pics of the grand kids on the fly without trying to remember to bring an SD card full of pics when we visit.
