New “Cupcake” upadate for G1
A new update called “cupcake” details have been announced on the Android project site. Apparently we will be getting a lot more than a few bug fixes and supposed security patches. Just what else is there, take a look after the jump.
About this code drop:
- The “cupcake” branch is a read-only mirror of the private Android branch.
- cupcake is still very much a work in progress. It is a development branch, not a release.
- The first drop is a large roll-up commit of all of the changes since release-1.0. We will transition to regular, smaller roll-up drops, ultimately pushing individual commits.
- The cupcake branch will be merged into the master branch, so that all of the public patches can be used with the new code base. None of the commits in the public repositories will be lost, unless they no longer make sense or are obsoleted by the new code base. Due to the United States’ holiday season, though, this may not be finished until early January.
Notable changes introduced in cupcake:
Applications
- MMS
- New features
- Save attachments from MMS.
- Significant bug fixes
- Faster conversation list scrolling
- New features
- Email
- Significant bug fixes
- Accounts that were marked “never check” are not auto-checked.
- Date & time displayed using user preference (e.g. 24 hr vs. AM/PM).
- cc: displayed in message view.
- Relaxed POP3 parser rules so it works with non-compliant email servers.
- Significant bug fixes
-
-
- Password quoting bugs in IMAP. Makes it work for users with funny chars in their password (e.g. spaces).
-
-
-
- Various sources of errors in auto & manual account setup.
-
-
-
- Improvements on how we report various connection errors. Makes it much easier for user to diagnose failed account setups.
-
-
-
- New-mail notifications for POP3 accounts.
- Properly recover from POP3 connection failures, so that the next connection has a chance of working properly.
- Remove automatic accounts setup entries that were broken or not testable. Minor fixes to a few of the remaining entries. Improvements to warning dialogs used for a few special cases.
-
-
-
- New accounts are now set to check every 15 minutes (instead of defaulting to “never”).
-
-
-
- Fixed a bug causing approximately 1 in 25 outbound messages to freeze up the IMAP connection (to a Gmail based server) when transferred to the Sent folder. This broke the entire connection so new messages could not be downloaded either.
- Unit test framework so Email can be extended & tested more reliably.
- Fix IMAP manually-created accounts so message delete works properly.
-
- Alarm Clock
- Significant bug fixes
- Alert now plays audio/vibe directly, rather than through AlarmManager. AlarmClock alert starts playing audio/vibe in its IntentReceiver, rather than on activity start. These changes should prevent alarms from being blocked by modal dialogs.
- Significant bug fixes
- Package Installer
- Significant bug fixes
- Bugs related to replacing existing applications.
- Significant bug fixes
- Settings
- New features
- New menu option to list running processes in Settings->ManageApplications.
- New features
- Music
- New features
- Music playback fades in after suspending for phone call.
- New media search intent allows for 3rd party apps to launch or respond to media searches based on artist, album, or title.
Affects: Music Player, YouTube, Browser applications.
- New features
- Browser
- New features
- Updated WebKit browser core, synced with Nov 2008 WebKit version.
- Support for new, optimized JavaScript engine (SquirrelFish).
- Copy / paste is enabled in the browser. To copy with touch, press and hold the shift key and select the text. Releasing the shift key or ending the touch drag copies the text. To copy with the trackball, press and hold the shift key, move the cursor to the selection start, click the trackball, and move the trackball to the extend the selection. Releasing the shift key, or clicking the trackball a second time, copies the text.
- Find is enabled in the browser. To find text, choose it from the menu and type the text to find.
- Drawing has been sped up substantially by supporting partial content invalidates and partial screen invalidates. Pages with animations are 5x faster.
- New features
- VoiceDialer
- New features
- VoiceDialer supports ‘open app’ command
- New features
- Camera/Gallery
- New features
- Video recorder mode
- Share intent for videos
- Video thumbnails
- Local file playback
- New features
Download manager
- New features
- Support for HTTP codes 301, 302, 303 and 307 (redirects).
- HTTP code 503 is now handled, with support for retry-after in delay-seconds.
- Downloads that were cleanly interrupted are now resumed instead of failing.
- Applications can now pause their downloads.
- Retry delays are now randomized.
- Connectivity is now checked on all interfaces.
- Downloads with invalid characters in file name can now be saved.
Framework
- New features
- Support of touch events in WebView.
- New JavaScript engine (SquirrelFish) in WebView.
-
- Input method framework, for soft keyboards and other on-screen input methods. Includes new APIs for applications to interact with input methods, and the ability for third party developers to write their own input methods.
-
- Access to the raw audio data for playback and recording from application code.
-
- New PendingIntent.FLAG_UPDATE_CURRENT option.
- Support for top-level boolean resources.
- Tactile feedback to the LockPatternView. Tactile feedback can be enabled/disabled by going to Settings > Security & location and then checking/unchecking “Use tactile feedback”. Note that this can be used independently of the visual feedback of the lines (”Use visible pattern”). Thus it gives users a middle ground between showing the lines on the screen and having no feedback at all.
- PackageManager changes to support un-installation of partially installed applications. Added new flag PackageManager.GET_UNINSTALLED_PACKAGES to include partially installed apps in all relevant PackageManager api’s. ManageApplications screen now lists such partially installed apps and the user can uninstall these applications completely.
- Support third party updates of system applications. New menu options in Settings->ManageApplications to list updated system applications.
- Framework support to list current running processes. New API in ActivityManager.
- Framework feature to declare required configurations by applications. New manifest attribute uses-configuration in android manifest.
- Hardware accelerated video encode (video recorder) in opencore.
- Simplified SREC speech recognition API available.
- Streaming audio I/O for applications.
- Significant bug fixes
- Fixed issues with saving state in the view hierarchy, so that you can properly subclass from something like TextView and create your own state that inherits from that provided by TextView.
-
- TextView now implements onKeyMultiple(), so that flinging the trackball will result in accelerated scrolling. This required some changes to movement methods, and included some improvements to the acceleration computed when flinging.
- Framework bug fixes in PackageManager to share/un-share permissions for applications with shared uid’s.
- Significant rework of Settings->ManageApplications Performance and UI enhancements.
- A number of settings in android.provider.Settings.System were moved to android.provider.Settings.Secure. Only system software can modify these settings. Additionally, a new permission, WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS, is required to access these settings. The old constants in Settings.System have been deprecated. It is possible to read settings values via Settings.System using the deprecated constants. However, attempts to modify these settings via Settings.System will result in a log message and the setting value will be left unchanged.
- Many bug fixes in the media framework
- New features
- Support for A2DP & AVRCP profiles.
- Significant bug fixes
- First connection after pairing always fails on many carkits.
- Mini Cooper and some late model BMW cars fail to use Bluetooth or take 2 minutes for Phone Book transfer.
System software
- New features
-
- New kernel based on Linux 2.6.27.
- Improvements to the wakelock API.
- Work to transition to the USB Gadget Framework underway.
- Basic x86 support.
- New features
-
- SIM Application Toolkit 1.0.
- Green CALL button is no longer a shortcut for “add a new call”. This has been a rarely used feature and confusing if triggered accidentally.
- Longer in-call screen timeout when using the speakerphone.
- “Show dialpad” / “Hide dialpad” item added to the in-call menu, to make it easier to discover the DTMF dialpad.
- Significant bug fixes
- An obscure case where the Phone UI could cause the device to not go to sleep on its own. This would happen if user bails out of the in-call screen by hitting HOME, followed by the call disconnecting remotely.
- Don’t allow a single tap to open the in-call dialpad. It is now required to touch and drag it. This makes it much harder to accidentally open the dialpad by touching the screen with your face.
Developer Tools
- New features
- Enable handset manufacturers to extend the Android SDK with add-ons. SDK add-ons will include:
- system libraries to let developers use additional APIs provided by handset manufacturers or from other 3rd party vendors that handset manufacturers chose to include
- emulator system images, skins, and hardware configuration to let developers test their applications on their Android implementation
- Enable handset manufacturers to extend the Android SDK with add-ons. SDK add-ons will include:
Build System
- New features
- The functions in build/envsetup.sh should be much more useful.

It will not work on the G1.
To: android-platform
Subject: Building-For-Dream
Date: Wed, 31 Dec 2008 00:51:11 -0800 (PST)
I have followed instruction on http://source.android.com/documentation/building-for-dream
and build the software for G1/ADP1. After flash the system.img,
userdata.img and boot.img to my G1, the phone will come up. However,
if you do adb logcat, you can see a lot of message being printed out
and phone will reboot without doing anything. It is not very stable
and it is difficult to do real development work based on the current
code in repository.
I then tried to build based on release 1.0. However, the build will
fail in variety of places. I then compared the file that I downloaded around week of Dec. 15 and found out that there are differences in hardware/msm7k and few other places. I try to glue them together to have the code built and so far i haven’t been successful. Is there a way to have the three projects needed in building-for-dream to build with release-1.0? My goal is to build code that is stable.
Then, based on that, I can make progress on my own goal.

clamdigger on January 16th, 2009 11:35 am
when i got my phone (November 18th), it did not have the RC30 update. about a day after i activated my phone, i was walking out of work and all of a sudden a little notification popped up on my screen, asking me if i wanted to install an update. i accepted, and it began automatically. im guessing if this whole “cupcake” BS is real (sucks that google/android wont even confirm…) then i assume it will be distributed the same way the RC30 was – over the air
Vihtoo Myint on January 16th, 2009 6:49 pm

Best thoughts, Matt
taylor on January 23rd, 2009 2:30 am
Google never gave an actual date for realease so it can come anytime , cupcake is a major update and they have to take a lot of time to make sure its bug free , so everyone just has to be patient and it will be here sooner than you know it
Ankur on January 26th, 2009 3:05 am

I hope the G1 Cupcake Update will fix the googlemap on the iphone. The phone just CANNOT locate your real/true position, whereas iPhone will do that. It puts your location couple of miles or streets away.
Also, how do we get the update. Will this be a public push to individual phones, or you have to sign another “Two year CONTRACT” with T-MOBILE to get the update?

Okay now, Its Jan 29,2009 and still no update!!!! Two days left for the month to end and we will still be waiting like dummies
Donutspen on January 29th, 2009 5:27 pm
*From G1* I think this whole “tease the public thing that T-Mobile is pulling is stupid. I have waited patiently for this the whole month. I mean, sure, we want a working release, but the wait is killing everyone. If they were not prepared, they should not have leaked it. And BTW, I would KILL T-Mobile if it was a Pay per OTA Update…
Guy on January 29th, 2009 8:08 pm
How can you blame T-Mobile for the delay?
They’re not the ones responsible for it, Android is.
All the dates that have been given we’re just predicted targets.
T-Mobile employees haven’t even been told about it, which I find ridiculous as its been leaked on the internet for 2 months.
And technically, the next G1 update is’nt “Cupcake”, It’s called RC-31 and It’s only going to include some of the features so all the “Cupcake” hype isn’t even going to be worth it.

Ikibod on January 29th, 2009 11:59 pm
Because they are the ones releasing the ota dumb*** not google. Both are to blame! When did google get a wireless network? Oh wait they didn’t. I hate people!

Look the cupcake is coming be patient ppl and the cupcake comes with a virtual on screen keyboard adobe flashplayer video and save mms that’s all I’ve herd from a friend and all I know is the adobe flashplayer will forsure make the g1 the best phone out

clamdigger on January 30th, 2009 10:18 am
@Frank – turn the GPS feature ON then use Google Maps… it gets my location down to the T every time. maybe you have a defective phone?
@Betolicious – the RC-31 (or “Cupcake”) update definitely will NOT have adobe flash, and probably won’t have video recorder either… do your research
tmob employee on January 30th, 2009 2:18 pm
Just to let you guys know that the “cupcake” update will start being rolled out from the 9th of feb. (uk) not sure about the states
Guy on January 30th, 2009 4:08 pm
@ Ikibod
If they had the update to send OTA then they would have by now, Its Androids fault because they haven’t finished it yet and are fixing bugs and whatever.
T-Mobile’s only responsibility is to send the update when they have it.
How can you be so ignorant to keep blaming T-Mobile?
Incase you haven’t noticed, even they are sick and tired of everyone complaining and moaning to them about it so they set up a forum so you can cry about it.
Its ridiculous.

wangatang on February 1st, 2009 12:51 am
i was looking forward to the update today at least as well, we basically have a guinea pig product(G1) that is very lacking, i remember them calling this phone the supposed “iphone killer’, but this phone has killed itself, it leaves u wanting so much out of it because the power is there but the development team do not seem to know what to do with this phone. It is very tedious to use simple things like having to pop the keyboard out everytime u need to type and having the phone screen go dark whenever u are in a call. WTF T-mobile for putting out a trully untested product. Now who knows if this update will even be given to us G1 owners and not just developed for an obvious G2 that is already built since the G1 was an utter failure. Get with the prgram t-mobile, no wonder apple iphone is still waxing everyone’s butt.

T-Marco on February 4th, 2009 8:30 pm
hey dan? check if you have stereo bluetooth
Guy on February 6th, 2009 11:59 am
This is quite irritating now;
Everyone who claim to have the now infamous “Cupcake” update are liars.
The only update that has been sent to a few people for testing is now called RC-33 which basically, sorts out the bugs.
Hopefully this will improve bluetooth because its appauling.
Feb 15th is now the next date given. I know that the G1 is in strong competition with the iPhone, but having voice search feature, simply because the iPhone has it is quite stupid. Also with the Labrinth game, it just seems like its trying to be the same, not different.
Shame.

T-Mobile announces April 21st “private launch event” in NYC
by Joshua Topolsky, posted Apr 9th 2009 at 12:31PM
Well well well. Well. What do we have here? Apparently the cats and kittens over at T-Mobile have something special planned on Tuesday, April 21st. We’ve just gotten a very brief email letting us know that something was going down, but without any other detail. Obviously our gadget-alarms started clanging, and the way we see it we’ve only got a few things to get excited about. Will we see the launch of Cupcake? Could this be the official US unveiling of the Magic? Or perhaps we’ll finally get to see the new Sidekick which just hit the FCC. Look — anything is possible, but whatever happens, we’ll be there. What do you guys think is in store?

I’m just thinking by now that there is no cupcake. They have been saying that they would release this update for like 4 months so I’m not counting on anytging.
