GPS on Verizon BlackBerry’s Unlocked

For quite a while, Verizon users were always shafted on using their device’s GPS. Then the Storm came out and shocked all that GPS was open. Well, it seems Verizon has the same idea for the other BlackBerry’s with one catch.

You must be running OS 4.5 (which, if you aren’t, upgrade) to get a lock and may also require a service book resend. Also, BlackBerry Maps is the only application at this time that can take advantage, as Google Maps, Windows Live, and other apps aren’t connected to the GPS for some reason.

After about 15-30 seconds of firing BB Maps up, I acquired a signal from 11 satellites, more than my TomTom in the same spot. Everything is accurate and is also sensitive to walking. Shame the maps aren’t as detailed as Google Maps. Hopefully that will change soon though.
