Verizon Wireless is porting a version of its parent company's "iPhone killer" the Samsung F700, and will be calling it the Samsung u940. Combing a large touchscreen on the front of the cellphone with a slide-out keyboard, the u940 is appealing to the eye. Its speculated release date is early Q1 of 2008.

I find the U940 a lot more interesting because I like the slide form factor more than I like the flip-open form factor of the Voyager.
However, in light of Verizon opening up their network, I'd have to put a hold on the decision in general. Imagine the U940 with the Croix interface - that's what I'm imagining, and that's why I can't get a new phone until '08 (even though my 8600 is driving me up the damn wall).

True, the u940 does have a certain appeal to it that catches the eye. However, I'm an LG fanboy all the way (and I couldn't wait until 2008 to create my own account with Verizon). Once the handset releases, I may consider purchasing it at full retail as a back-up in case my Voyager craps out on me. I doubt that Verizon retains the Croix interface on the device since they'll be releasing it as a subsidized handset.

I know they won't do it for the subsidized iteration, but I've been wondering to myself whether VZW won't allow the companies it normally does work with to release versions of their phone with the native UI.
It's not even something that would have to be advertised; just offering that as a possibility for the tech aficionados would give them all sorts of positive word of mouth press.

True, I'm just wondering how much more would it cost than the regular subsidized version of the handset.

I wouldn't think the prices for native UI phones would be that much higher than the unsubsidized prices for Verizon's current lineup.
I mean, the Voyager is $500 unsubsidized, IIRC. I was willing to pay that before I heard about this open network in '08 business, so I'd be willing to pay that (or even more) for a full-featured phone.
All I'm asking for is a firmware update to the Voyager to allow me to view .flv format videos. I'm crossing my fingers on this one!

Given Verizon's history of new firmware releases, I'd give it at least another 2-3 months before V02 hits the stores. I think it's better if they wait a little longer, in order to give them time to find a fix for as many issues as they can first.

Well if we look at the Env, that phone was very well put together and that seemed like they waited about 6 months to come out with a V02. I'm not totally sure how long it was, but I remember they didn't come out with one for a while, and it wasn't even totally necessary.
There is no such thing as an iPhoneKiller or an iPodKiller. Companies saying all these devices are apple killers is just pointless and meaningless.
