Default New G1 not working with my 3 day grandfathered rate plan

I bought the G1 first thing this morning but can not use it because it does not work with my old rate plan and I don't want to change. I had the same problem when I put my Blackberry on this plan but thought a tech could quickly solve the problem of getting internet on G1 like they did with the Blackberry As U can tell I have internet on this Blackberry that I am accessing this page with.

I assume T-Mobile USA is picking up the practice of forcing customers to change their rate plans to the newer, more expensive ones in order to upgrade to a newer cellphone (just like every other U.S wireless provider).

My theory on the matter is that the number of people actually using the $5 internet plan hack was pretty small and the amount of data they were actually pulling was neglible. It probably wasn't worth the effort and negative press to block them. Knowing that 3G was coming, they instead focused on making it difficult/impossible for users to do the same with the next round of hardware.

I sympathize with those aggravated by carriers forcing them to change plans but I have some advice for you: Get over it. Wireless carriers exist for one reason and it's to further a business model of recurring revenue. To quote a wise friend of mine, "The only reason businesses don't punch you in the face and take your money is because it's illegal."

I certainly don't mean to discourage any enterprising individuals from trying but I doubt it's going to be possible. I don't think they'll ever be able to stop people from creating tethering apps but it seems entirely possible that they could limit network access based on device type. Hoping someone proves me wrong...
