Default Re: Directions for how to Tether with T-Mobile

the original extra dialup string is too long for pocket pc (non-phone), use this instead, it also works
+cgdcont=1,,"???"
when ??? is your APN, the one on the first post will be too long if you use internet2 or internet3
except motorola phones, you don't actually need it (DO NOT use it on HTC phones)
you can also ask me question for tethering, because I do it a lot on laptop and pda, and sometimes, on desktop, for backup purpose

Yea i know, that's why mine is checked in my screenshots, not sure if its the same on a BB plan. I think that i had to turn it off whenever i tethered on my BB. Gonna have to try with my Pearl later on tonight.

I have more detailed instructions, since I tether to T-Mobile Internet in different ways
dial up
here are the basics
phone number: *99#
modem: the modem you're installed/paired (bt)
the way to pair the modem
Broadcom
go to my Bluetooth Places->my devices
set your phone into pairing mode (show phone)
you should see your phone, put passcode (no matter what it is, make sure they're the same both sides, make sure you hide the phone after pairing)
you should see several services, pick dial-up networking and/or network access point (will mention later, some phones have this profile), make them shoutcut
IVT
open Soleil window
set your phone into pairing mode (show phone)
click the globe on the middle, you should see a new device in several seconds, right-click the device, pair device
put passcode (no matter what it is, make sure they're the same both sides, make sure you hide the phone after pairing)
double-click the phone, you should see a group of icons show up on the top, click either the first (PAN, will mention later) or second (dial-up networking)
*you need to run the connection once in order to let BlueSoleil to remember the device
Microsoft
go to control->Bluetooth Devices->Devices->Add
set your phone into pairing mode (show phone)
check "My device is setup and ready to be found"->next
put passcode (no matter what it is, make sure they're the same both sides, make sure you hide the phone after pairing)
Completing->OK
go to Bluetooth Devices again, click the device->services, you should see dial-up modem and PAN device (note: the networking service is not sharable)
you must memorize the name of the device vs Standard Modem over Bluetooth
when dialing, you must pick the name of the modem as modem

connect as NDIS/PAN service (it is recommended if your phone has it, and your host bt and phone bt version are 2.0+EDR for best possible speed)
you need to configure your phone's bt networking, enable it, and use appropriate APN for it (refer your phone manual)
for general use, use wap.voicestream.com
if you have grandfathered internet/total internet, use internet2.voicestream.com
if you have VPN (you get public IP instead of pooled), use internet3.voicestream.com
to enter
Broadcom
right-click the bluetooth icon->Quick connect->network service->your phone
IVT
open BlueSoleil window, click the phone, click the first icon from the left
Microsoft
go to Control Panel->Network connections->Bluetooth network, double click the icon
it'll open a new window, and show available phone->connect

Thanks for the awesome an detailed instructions, but I do have 2 questions.

When the dial-up window pops up, the directions say to "Enter Init String for your data plan", but what exactly do I enter and where?

Also, under the modem setup section, I believe I enter some commands for "extra initialization commands" under modem setup, but I can't figure out exactly what to enter in that box. The instructions say "Enter at+cgdcont=1,"IP","YOUR APN" (wap.voicestream.com) is the APN", but I'm not sure exactly what to put. Nothing has worked so far.

Could someone please shed some light on this for me? Thanks!

Both of your questions seem to be the same. Try this....
To enter the extra initialization commands go to Control Panel -> Select Phone and Modem Options -> highlight the modem you are using (should be either the one through USB named something to do with your phone, or Standard Bluetooth Modem) -> Select Properties -> go to the advanced tap and type in the string in the extra initialization commands line -> Click OK

Thanks, that clarifies WHERE to type in the commend string. I'm using Bluetooth, so I select the generic bluetooth modem properties. However I still don't know exactly WHAT to type in there. I'm having a hard time interpreting the instructions as far as what goes here. If you could type out exactly what I enter for the initialization commands, that would be awesome!

Enter at+cgdcont=1,"IP","wap.voicestream.com"

There you go.... as long as you are using TMobileWeb otherwise it is one of the other 2 APNs
