No. 2 electronics retailer will accept returns within 90 days of purchase

RICHMOND, Va. - Circuit City Stores Inc. is getting on the Blu-ray digital video format bandwagon by tripling the period in which customers who purchased a rival HD DVD player can return them.
The nation's No. 2 electronics retailer has instructed its stores to "take care of our customers" and accept returns of HD DVD players within 90 days of purchase, spokesman Jim Babb said.
Several industry moves in recent weeks — including the announcement by creator Toshiba Corp. that it has stopped making HD DVD players and discs — have handed the format a clear defeat in the battle for primacy in the next generation of movie-disc technology.
"The recent resolution of the next generation of video disc formats is an important and singular development in the marketplace," Babb said in an e-mail statement.
When Toshiba dropped out of the fight, it conceded to Sony's Blu-ray format, which delivers crisp, clear pictures and sound on high-definition TVs.
The biggest battle between two video formats since Betamax lost out to VHS in the 1980s was resolved after multiple movie studios, including Sony Pictures, Walt Disney Co. Warner Bros. Entertainment and News Corp.'s Twentieth Century Fox, pledged to support the Blu-ray format.
In the long run, consumers are expected to benefit because they no longer have to agonize over which technology to choose for high-definition movies. But Toshiba's defeat leaves 1 million customers worldwide with dead-end hardware.
Circuit City, which has a usual 30-day return policy, is allowing customers who purchased HD DVD players to return them for store credit. The policy doesn't apply to HD DVD movie discs.
The Richmond company noted that while some people may want to return the players, others are buying them on clearance because they still play high-quality HD DVDs and improve the playback of standard DVDs.

You kiddin me? I personally am eyeing the now-lowered price of $49 for the Xbox HD-DVD player [no longer being manufactured] and grab super cheapo HD DVD's. There are still thousands of HD DVD movies out there (3,000 or so I think) and they're turning dirt cheap! It's like holding on to a record player, or Beta Max, or something.
You all know there is still a network of people out there trading cheap Sega Dreamcast games, right? That thing has a cult "rarity" status. I think the HD DVD would be something like that. I mean, they are STILL the same High Definition movies... you just can't get brand new ones anymore.

Microsoft is considering adding a Blu-Ray player as a peripheral for the Xbox 360

I sure wish they would tell their own customer supports reps about this. If they really are considering it and it's not a rumor, then it should be passed on the wire to ALL employees. Officially, I can actually only tell you that the addition of a Blu-Ray player to the Xbox 360 is "speculation" and I haven't heard anything "official" beyond that.
Anyhoo, Blu-Ray discs [and players] are too expensive for now, and will be for awhile, so I am sticking to good ol' DVD's and possibly cheapo HD DVD's selling at bargain basement prices
MP3 Newswire has been tracking post-mortem HD-DVD sales on eBay and surprisingly found that there are many takers.... New sealed boxes of the Toshiba HD-A3, which shipped last fall for $300, are now drawing on average about $75 on eBay, where plummeting HD-DVD movie prices are averaging between $6 and $10.... With the win, Blu-ray manufacturers have raised prices.

Why wouldn't Microsoft add it? That's just another curve the Playstation 3 will have over the Xbox 360 if they don't (besides raw processing power). It was evened out at first but now they NEED to make a decision and fast. I also heard they'll be coming out with yet ANOTHER SKU this year!

More than likely they will, but Microsoft's primary focus on the Xbox is that it is a gaming machine, first and foremost. But yes, if they had an HD DVD player add on for it before, they'll likely have another add=on for Blu-Ray.
ANOTHER SKU? Man...well, as long as it's not RRoD prone then it's fine by me So far so good with my elite But umm, have you heard anything that might be coming with this new SKU? [and where do you hear this sort of stuff from... internet rumors?]

I hadn't even thought to do that...... And to think I gave away my Dreamcast.....
