Question TomTom GPS...

I am considering purchasing a portable navigation unit and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions or opinions. I am leaning toward the TomTom ONE XL-S GPS unit at BestBuy for $299 ( http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....&skuId=8512031 ). Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

make sure it has memory slot
the V3 doesn't
and the reception if TomTom ONE is not that good, and it's not good for "walking"

I've personally say go with Garmin, since their products seem to be rated higher than Tom Tom. Garmin is the brand I purchased when I bought my portable GPS navigator.

I have the ONE, not the XL but the smaller one. I think its fantastic and works pretty damn good...no real complaints (at least that can be attributed to the unit itself)...worth it to me...

I purchased the model in the op three weeks ago after reading the posts here and researching the different models and I am very happy with it. I definitely think it was worth the money.

What's the cost of updating the map each year? Do you know how that works?

I don't know how much it cost but looking at their website, it seems that you install a program on the computer and it checks for any updates and see if you want to pay for it.

Right now, I don't have a TomTom One. I was planing to get it until my brother got me a cheapo GPS. I am going to replace after using it for a year so my brother won't be sad that I got rid of it too soon.

There is a program that checks to see if there are any updates, and shows what is available for download. Some of it is free, and some you have to pay for. When they release a new version of the map file, it cost $39.95 to update it. But like someone else said they only release new versions once a year. Once a week though they release updates to the Points of Interest and locations of the Satellites, and those are free.
