LAKE OF THE OZARKS — Rumors have had to be squashed over the proposed Wireless 411 Directory.

The directory is an attempt to create a phone book of cell phone numbers, especially as more and more consumers forgo landlines in favor of cell phones.

AllTel, Cingular, Nextel, Sprint PCS and T-Mobile have all joined together to make the list happen. They say the list would be benefit consumers by providing directory assistance.

Others, including Verizon’s president, have stated the list is a terrible idea and could easily be misused and subject users to unwanted sales calls.

The Wireless 411 Privacy Act prohibits wireless carriers from including subscribers’ phone numbers in published directories without their consent.

But the directory would not be published in print or on the Internet and only be availabe when someone called a 411 service and requested information. Customers will have to ‘opt-in’ to the system by physically registering their cell phone numbers.

Customers that choose to register their number will still be protected under the national Do Not Call Registry from unwanted telemarketing calls.

Expected to be operational in 2006, the directory has not moved forward.
