If I decide I need to boost the router signal, will adding an antenna designed to do that change the battery life expectations up or down or neither?

it shouldn't affect the battery. with the way the router is set up it basically sends a signal to the phone saying "i'm here use me when you want" so if your not using it there is really no battery being used. most phones that do wifi are basically searching for the wifi every few seconds like the phone saying "are you there". that uses more battery.
