My AT&T online chat transcript
I don't expect every customer service interaction to go my way, or to get an immediate answer or resolution. And I admit, the problem I was trying to solve here is a bit on the arcane side. But I still think this demonstrates pretty well how crappy the online customer service forum is. (I obfuscated the rep's name and some of my personal info)
CustomerServiceRep: Whisper to noahd1
Hello there I will need to pull up your account to make sure your account is provisioned well. This is a secure channel. Please send me the wireless phone number with the area code first, the name on the account and the last four digits of the social security number.
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
xxxxxxxx is my phone number
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
xxxxx xxxx is the name on the account
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
xxxx are the last four digits of my SS#
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
to be clear about the problem - I do not receive notification of incoming MMS messages on my iphone (I'm aware that the iPhone does not natively support MMS)
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
please let me know if i need to exit "whisper mode"
CustomerServiceRep: Whisper to noahd1
Eric Thank you please turn your phone off and then back on
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
Is this directed at me? My name is Noah, not Eric.
CustomerServiceRep: Whisper to noahd1
Im sorry this is for you.
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
ok
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
i will turn off my phone and turn it back on. one second.
CustomerServiceRep: Whisper to noahd1
Thank you
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
ok. done.
CustomerServiceRep: Whisper to noahd1
Great please try to send a mms to yourself and see if you receive it back thank you
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
ok, one moment.
CustomerServiceRep: Whisper to noahd1
Just keep in mind this is not something you can do with a iPhone you will only be able to view attachments through e-mail.
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
i understand.
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
all i would like is notification that i have received an MMS
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
i have sent an MMS from another cingular phone to my number just now ... so far, nothing.
CustomerServiceRep: Whisper to noahd1
Just keep in mind this is not something you can do with a iPhone you will only be able to view attachments through e-mail.
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
you said that already
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
iPhone users should get notification via SMS of MMS messages. I do not receive any notification at all that a user is trying to send me a message.
CustomerServiceRep: Whisper to noahd1
Ok for any other questions please reach out to Apple 1.800.676.2775
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
i'm afraid this isn't an apple problem
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
this is a cingular problem since cingular is responsible for sending out SMS messages
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
isn't that correct
CustomerServiceRep: Whisper to noahd1
I'm sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you at this time. You will not be able to send mms on your iPhone. You can send sms are you haveing trouble with that?
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
[repname], i do not think you understand my problem.
CustomerServiceRep: Whisper to noahd1
I'm sorry if I misunderstood you. You said " I am having an issue with MMS on my iPhone" What trouble are you haveing?
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
When someone tries to send *me* an MMS message, I do not receive any indication on my phone that such a message has been sent to me. This message goes against my text message quota.
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
Other iphone users have reported that they get an SMS message instead, with instructions on how to get this MMS message.
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
I do not get this.
CustomerServiceRep: Whisper to noahd1
This message could have been sent from a computer and then you get an SMS message instead, with instructions on how to get this MMS message.
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
it could have been, but it wasn't
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
it was sent from a phone via MMS
CustomerServiceRep: Whisper to noahd1
Ok that is why it comes in as a SMS because your not able to use mms on your iPhone.
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
[repname], you still do not understand my problem
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
you are getting closer though
CustomerServiceRep: Whisper to noahd1
If the recipient is a customer of a carrier that AT&T does NOT have an MMS interoperability agreement with or is not an MMS-capable device, then AT&T will send a text message to the recipient customer using existing SMS inter-carrier functionality.
The recipient will receive a text message notification inviting them to visit AT&T Wireless (http://www.viewmymessage.com) to see/hear their MMS message.
Recipients have 7 days from the time they receive the SMS message to view their MMS message online before it is automatically expired.
Each message contains a unique username and password.
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
i do not receive *anything*
CustomerServiceRep: Whisper to noahd1
Any you will not unless it'
CustomerServiceRep: Whisper to noahd1
it's sent as a text message
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
i do not receive a text message
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
you just sent me a snippet that demonstrates that i am supposed to get an SMS message
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
you just proved to me yourself, that i'm supposed to received an SMS message
CustomerServiceRep: Whisper to noahd1
I understand your concern for any other questions regarding the use of your iPhone you will need to reach out to Apple 1.800.676.2775. There is nothihng else I can help you with today I'm sorry.
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
I am disapointed with your support today and your inability to even understand my problem.
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
forwarding me to apple was not the result I wanted.
CustomerServiceRep: Whisper to noahd1
I'm sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you at this time.
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
in the very least you should have told me to speak to cingular technical support as this is a cingular issue.
CustomerServiceRep: Whisper to noahd1
We will not be able to help you with any questions regarding an mms because your device will not support a mms.
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
sorry you don't understand the issue I am having.
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
never said i wanted to receive MMS
CustomerServiceRep: Whisper to noahd1
I understand your question just to clarify someone is sending you a mms and your not receiving any notification right?
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
that is correct
CustomerServiceRep: Whisper to noahd1
Ok that is the problem your phone doesn't support mms so you will not receive any notification.
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
i will! you just cut and paste a section from help that says I will!
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
and other iphone users do!
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
you get an SMS message!
CustomerServiceRep: Whisper to noahd1
That message is send from a online site and it's sent as a text message not a mms message
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
i have seen with my own eyes, some send an MMS FROM A PHONE to an iPhone and the iPhone gets a TEXT MESSAGE
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
are you saying i haven't seen this happen?
CustomerServiceRep: Whisper to noahd1
Ok then you will need to get with that custmoer to find out if he/she had 3rd party software to send that mms from there iPhone.
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
i have used the *same* phone
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
to send to *MY* iphone
noahd1: Whisper to CustomerServiceRep
same phone sending MMSes to different iPhones -- 1 iphone gets a text, the other does not.
CustomerServiceRep: Whisper to noahd1
