does anyone else watch those 2 shows and if so what do you think of them?????
before i moved back into the civilization about 3 yrs ago, i lived off the land. and before that i did live in civilazation. i just got fed up witrh all of the daily bs, and a few other things, so i said F it, im leaving basically.so for about 2 yrs i went into the ozarks and lived off of the land, i was well knowledged in society and wilderness living before i went. i had a shotgun and a pistol and a few knives, a bow, a few article of clothes, and my dog. in the summer i hunted squirrell, deer, turtles, quail, dove, fished alot etc... and in winter i hunted deer, rabbit, and other small legal game. i paid my $25 bucks for a hunting liscense so that was like paying $25 bucks for 1 yr worth of food. i never poached or did anything illegal to survive. the main thing was that i wanted to get away from was people period!!! i wanted to get my thoughts together, and purify my body of all the toxins that are subjected to us in our daily lives that we take for granite and ignore, like flouride, nicotine, caffine, and all the other things that can harm ourselves. when i was in the wild myself i was in the best health that i had ever been in. i never caught a cold, had body aches, had a runny nose, etc...

i like those 2 shows, because they kinda help a person out if they get into certain situations, but there seems to be a little bit of farfetchedness to a point. i like man vs wild better because bear seems more realistic, where survivorman les seems setup to a point. im not saying its a scam dont get me wrong, i like both shows alot, and their saftey is the utmost important. id like to go out into the wild with them both and swap camp stories with them both. i like bears personality, hell he drank a canteen of his own piss because he needed something to drink,on tonights episode, and hes not allowed to get help from his camera crew unless its a life or death situation. survivorman les is kool aswell, he can play a mean harp.

when i came to move back into civilization, i decided to give society another chance, and i had some illness in my family also. it was wild how i found out, i had a relative come out and hunt me down to give me the message, he was at my campsite eating my squirrell dumplings when i arrived. i loved living off the land. there was no distractions, you get so in tune to nature, and become healthier than before etc...

i did notice alot had changed when i got back, in the short time i was gone. i was into computers alot, i installed slackware 7 right before i left and when i got back there was slackware 10.2, the cellfones improved big time in that short time also.

anyways im just babeling now, so what does everyone think about them shows....and also what kinda wilderness experience do you have? wanna swap stories?

I'd love to try that (and yes, I've watched those shows a little, but not religiously). The shows do seem "set-up" to me because of the cameras. But I love camping. Unfortunately, camping doesn't have much care or concern for the state of my back, lol! Do you have any suggestions for comfortable sleeping in the rough?

ive gathered alot of leaves, wild weeds, grass, and rabbit skins bundled up, and made large pillows and mattresses out of deer skins sewed together. if u dont like the feel of the deer skin after its hardened, it will soften up over time. u can sew a bunch of rabbit skins together to make a blanket and a smaller piece to lay on top of your head area. rabbit fur feels extremly soft to the touch, and really confortable. but you need alot of the pelts to really make anything. 1 good size rabbit will make a mitten or a shoe, or u could use it for a pouch. it takes a little time to clean ur skins though, but the end result is well worth it. the comfort factor rox. you can use a deer skin for alot of things, like shirts, pants, a window for ur shelter, because when cured it becomes transparent and hard if u dont soften it up.

I went camping last week and discovered the most beautiful place in Indiana I never knew existed! AND the place has a backpacking camp that you hike 2-1/2 miles to get to - no cars allowed. I wanna go back.....

was it the dunes in chesterton, or indiana beach in monticello? i been to those 2 places before...i think the indiana ppl call them dunes mt baldo or something like that...lol whatever they called it, it was funny name...

They call it Mt. Baldy, but NO, the place was Shades State Park near Waveland, Indiana (west of Indianapolis, not too far off Route 41, south of I-74). There are 10 hiking trails and a backpacking camp. Trail #1 looks like something out of King Kong's Island (the newest King Kong movie). Seriously. It's worth the trip, the gas, and the admission price ($5/car on weekends, camping is $10-$13/night).

~Evil~|~Steg~
07-20-2007, 05:18 PM
mt baldy ok kool, i knew it was something bald related lol... those r the only 2 places in indiana that i been to for a short period of time... if u ever get to arkansas u should try the diamond mines in murfeesborro, its 5 bucks to get in and they will buy back any diamonds u find, or u can keep them...hope i spelled that right? another kool place is the nevada desert. i loved that area, i lived in the dead center of the state, in a town called tonopah. alot of nice scenery if ur into hiking up the side of a mountain... theres alot of springs there so fresh water isnt a worry...i love the natural sweet smell thats in the air when up the mt. a good way for a person to get in tune with nature if ya ask me...

EDIT: almost forgot to mention the ghost towns that are still out there, u can find old rotted wagon wheels, worn down buildings, old blacksmith equipment etc... theres one town there with a population of 4 and those ppl are glad to see strangers ya know lol...i spent the week with them and they showed me alot of history from that area...

Arrowheads, Indian arrowheads, Pottery, Native American Artifacts. (http://www.caddotc.com/)
heres a link to indian artifacts from the same town as the diamond mines, alot of my stuff is there ;) i hated to sell but when ur stranded ya need to do what ya gotta do...

Heres a few of the items i used on a daily basis when i was living off the land, i had more stuff but i gave them away to ppl as souvinours, if i ever go back, it wouldnt be to hard to restock up on them.

The mess kit on the far left, is a WWII issued, which servers many purposes, from cooking to panning for gold...literly. the buck knife i really never used it, but had it just incase it had a need ya know, i used a larger handmade filipino itak (bolo) for my general usage. the flat black rock next to the buck knife is a piece of slate that i found near an old rail road junction, that was constructed back in 1928, thats what the rusted plaque said on the railing, I use it for a turkey call. the little shiny block below it with the hole, is my flint and magnesium block, i bought back in 1990. If the flint ever gets to low, you can always find an actual flint rock near streams and creeks etc, the natural flint works better i think. The blade without a handel below it is a blade from a batangas made balisong, which was made from a leaf spring, it dates back to around the 1950`s for that paticular blade. i used that for shaving, the blade is so hard it holds a very nice razor edge. The 2 stones below that are my sharpening stones, the broken one to the right is store bought, and the one to the left is an actual indian artifact that i found in that shape, i used it alot to hone my shaving blade. The balisong in the center of the pic, is one of the blades i used for skinning, eating with, gutting and cleaning small game, and fish...etc its a hand made batangas blade aswell, the blade is made from a ball bearing, and a custom blade i ordered when i was in the PI. The section of deer antler next to that, i used it for when i got a bad cut, you can scrape it into a powder and put it on your wound to help coagulate the blood and would help in the healing, also if you get hard up you can eat the powder for a good source of calcium. when i got back i had it left over and intended to make a knife handle out of it, and have a old file as a blade. so you see just having them few items, in the wilderness would be a life saver. Learning how to flint knap is a good thing to learn aswell. you can make tools like knives, drills, spears, arrows, fish hooks, ....etc. you can also use blades of grass for deer calls, bird calls...etc

I should clarify about Mt. Baldy. Mt. Baldy is a very specific hill at the Dunes. People just call the Dunes, the Dunes. highly original, lol. There is also a Mt. Baldy in Saugatuck, Michigan that we have climbed as well. Back in my young and strong days, hahaha. I'm more of a flatlands lassie now....

Here's the deal: I'd like to learn more specifics about ultralight camping and backpacking. I don't really mean "survivalism" per se, but more along the lines of what to pack and carry that would be necessary and/or nice to have while backcamping. I'd like to keep the total weight, including food, shelter, and clothing, to under 30 pounds, and to something that will all fit in a backpack. Not extreme weather conditions either. For 3-7 days. I don't really want to "live off the land" but rather leave a very small footprint, KWIM?

~Evil~|~Steg~
07-20-2007, 09:43 PM
ok more of a leisure type then correct? ok how about this, a backpack, a canteen i like them military squid paks they wear on ur back underneath the backpak, a cup, a good knife like a ka-bar or similar fixed blade, or a good strong folder, a few rolls of toilet paper, food i like them mre`s meals ready to eat, alot of calories and they fill u up, plus have alot of extras in them, pair of shorts pair of pants, 2 shirts 1 long sleeve 1 short sleeve, under garments, matches, or a flint and magneseaum stone like i have in that pic, id also bring along some lint from ur dryer for fire starting also. map of the area ur going to, a compass, a cellfone just incase of emergency, extra fone battery, some plastic bags, a few diff size ziplock bags, one of them loud air powered horns, a notepad and a few pencils not pens, a toothbrush, toothpaste, a good quality rain poncho, and a roll of cord.... hows that sound? will get u by and will all fit into a med size backpak with a bit of room left over...

~Evil~|~Steg~
07-20-2007, 09:56 PM
though i should have mentioned that if u get the right poncho, it will double as a small tent, and also forgot to mention that you could pack a thinsulate blanket, as they r compact, and use your backpack as a pillow/headrest...tho cord i mentioned would be for supporting ur poncho as a tent :) lol i had 2 kids distracting me as i was trying to type out that last post :)

CSI_Nut
07-20-2007, 09:58 PM
ummm.... do the tent, tarp and sleeping bag fit in there too? Or do you sleep au natural under the stars? I just found my wind-up flashlight in my kids' room, I'm so excited about that, LOL! I've already verified that Alltel, Verizon, Cingular, Centennial, and T-Mobile don't get coverage where I want to go, lol, there's not much point to packing any of those cell phones. Maybe US Cellular
would work, haha. I like the air horn idea - definitely louder than a whistle. My dog is pretty loud too, lol.

I also have a sterno portable stove that folds flat and an embarrasing number of sterno cans left over from graduation open houses. The knife issue is one I need to solve - I'd like a big knife but one that either folds up or has a sheath. And a tri-fold shovel that packs up. Why no pens? I'm giggling over the toilet paper - I guess leaves just don't cut it, huh? Or else those MRE's leave a big footprint... I think I'll try an MRE before I leave just in case they gag me or something. Visions of Civil War Hard Tack are dancing through my head when the term MRE comes up...

~Evil~|~Steg~
07-20-2007, 10:22 PM
MREs - APack Ready Meals - Self-Heating Emergency Meals Ready to Eat (http://www.readymeal.com)
you could even carry a small machette they make them as small as 16"
no pens cause if u get drenched by water somehow, the ink would run all over ur stuff, keeping them in a ziplock wontwork for a long period of time cause the humidity/heat would also make them run.
for the shovel, id highly recomend a military surplus store, actually u can get all ur supplies there, and their all better quality than ud get at like wallmart or gander mt, bass pro etc... bear grylls site has a supply ordering section there also. Travel clothing & equipment from Itchy Feet the travel specialists: - (http://beargrylls.itchyfeet.com/index.php) i was looking at some of the stuff there and its all good quality stuff. id like to get the flint and steel he sells there that he uses on the show, itd be better than what im using atm. u gotta remember that the more you carry, the harder it is gonna be for you to move around, lol just carrying my bow through the woods all day and thats all i had other than a knife, after all day it felt like i was carrying 100lbs lol...and it weighed around 10 lbs with 8 arrows in the quiver... but im assuming ur not gonna be going into the woods real deep, just mainly like trail hiking or similar??? you could make a bedroll and strap it to the bottom of ur backpak, it would be more compact than a sleeping bag. are u gonna be alone with ur dog? or have ppl with you? that also determins what u should take with you.

~Evil~|~Steg~

another reason i mentioned a cellfone was for taking pics aswell, cause i regreted never taking a camera with me, i have seen so much beautiful scenery when i was in the ozarks, and out in nevada, the rockies, etc... i dont have any pics just memories ya know. if u do take pics could u post them, id like to see them online if possible? it would bring back alot of memories. another reason im getting the sk3 it has the sd card, so i can take alot of pics. trust me, ull look back on all of it yrs l8tr and wanna kick urself in da butt for not doing it...

Thanks for the links - I'm checking them out now. The dream is just me and the dog. I may end up with 3 kids tagging along too. The dog is very protective of me and a good judge of character too. Other than that, he's pretty stupid, lol. I'd like to make him a pack to carry too. The store-bought ones I've seen look way too expensive to end up not fitting him right or falling apart.

I was thinking disposable cameras but taking the camera phone might be do-able if I can wrench it away from the spouse.

~Evil~|~Steg~
07-20-2007, 11:24 PM
ok kool... yeah i know how the dogs r, i have a rottweiller and shes real protective aswell, she saved me from getting bitten by a copperhead snake one day. people dont give dogs the credit they deserve sometimes ya know. dogs can also keep u warm at night aswell, they generate alot of body heat.

lol the new survivorman was on last night but i just seen it tonight, was wild cause a jaguar was stalking him and he had to run back to the safe hut with the villagers in the amazon... i would rather watch man vs wild though...but survivorman makes me laugh sometimes cause he is clumsy and does goofy mistakes alot, which you catch the humor if ya ever did the same mistakes urself lol...i like when he tries to start a fire with a bow and the caption says first attempt... then keeps increasing until iut gets to like 20th attempt, woooo hoooo fire... lol

Man VS Wild is such a cool show. I've watched a couple episodes that were really intense. For example, I remember Bear Grylls floating on a raft he made while tiger sharks were circling it. It was crazy!

lol, over in the philippines they have a balut vendor that goes around like an ice cream vendor yelling "BALUT" "BALUT" and you buy them and eat them right on the spot. imagine srambled eggs with a chunk of chicken in it, thats kinda what it tastes like, but the balut vendor gives you some vinegar to go along with it for flavor... i think you can buy balut in california now, if anyone is in cali, goto chinatown and try it out :)

EDIT: forgot to mention that the juice is prolly the worst part though, thats one of the reasons for the vinegar :)

I guess I haven't visited this forum in quite some time! Evil_Steg, I hope you're okay out there!

I know I'm sure looking forward to camping season - as is my trusty sidekick, Jake! Technically speaking, it IS camping season, but I've been busy too!

im still alive, thanx for wondering about me. yeah I've been extremly busy aswell, I can't wait to do some wilderness living again myself, lol its funny cause im living in 80acres of woods in a house atm... so does that still count... I still have my sk3, which I been using it for mainly ssh into my linux box, and note taking while on the go, I ended up breaking down and getting me a family my favs plan here rerscently for talk only, got that nokia 5300 music fone, so I may take a few videos of myself in da woods, and post them here. oh yeah guess what? I just ate some balut again last night :PPPP its getting harder to get it in the usa, since all of the bird flu stuff went on, they have a lot of regulations, and testing etc... on importing it. but ya can still find it, just a little more expensive.... yeah I been so busy, between building the new webpage, blog, and video site, not to mention working on my book, the video is complete, but have a few more things left to touch up on the book, and the copyrighting etc... then when I turn the book in for submission, its gonna take another 2 yrs before it gets printed, which sux.... well hope everyone is all doing good, u all can catch me on aim/icq since I keep my sk3 with me im always on... if ya don't have my im info just pm me here and ill hook ya up. c ya all l8tr ;)
