School: No Evidence Of Romance Before Teacher Married Student

"WILMINGTON, N.C. -- There was no credible evidence of a romantic relationship between a 40-year-old high school science teacher and a 16-year-old student until the couple married, Brunswick County school officials say.

Brenton Wuchae was a cross country coach who mentored Windy Hager at South Brunswick High School. He resigned in mid-June, the same day he married Hager.

The Brunswick County Board of Education released a detailed account of the school's involvement Tuesday, saying school administrators closely monitored and limited the couple's relationship but never found evidence of any romance. In November, South Brunswick High School Principal Vann Pennell directed Wuchae to cease all contact with Hager, noting that a lengthy list of phone calls and text messages with the student "did raise questions of poor judgment."

The school suspended Wuchae in May after finding that he had communicated with Hager at school. Both he and the teenager continued to deny a romantic relationship, the school board said. Brian Shaw, an attorney representing the school district, said Pennell also told Wuchae to resign or be fired. Wuchae resigned and married Hager, who had recently finished her sophomore year as one of the school's top runners.

"Prior to the surprise marriage, there simply was no credible evidence of a romantic relationship between the teacher and student," Katie McGee, the district's superintendent, said in a statement.

Hager's parents had approached both the school and authorities in hopes of ending the relationship. The Hagers have said they reluctantly signed a consent form allowing their daughter to marry her coach. The school system hired Wuchae as a teacher and coach in 2004. The district said it conducted a background check before hiring Wuchae and found no problems."

I read about this and was absolutely dumbfounded. The most disgusting part IMO was the parents actually signing the papers allowing their own daughter to marry (what I believe is) a pedophile. They said something along the line of, "what were we supposed to do, she's 16?!"... umm how about lock that CHILD (which is exactly what she is until she is legally an adult) in her room for the next 2 years and press charges against that disgusting excuse for a human being??!!

It's a shame. The girl could've done so much with her life. Just think... When she is 30, he will be 54! I don' think most of my 30-year-old friends would ever fit with a 54 year old.

Perhaps she is pregnant, and that's why the parents let her get married.

Slightly OT: What would you think would be the maximum "respectable" age difference between a couple?

as long as they are both adults. 'respectable' is in the eye of the beholder.

I ask this because I was 17 when I got married (and am still married almost 24 years later....) Perhaps I should clarify... I wasn't pregnant either. And my husband wasn't my teacher... But anyway - back to my question - I'm taking opinions now on what a maximum "respectable" age difference is... LOL

i believe the age difference thing comes into question when one of the people involved is a minor. the respectable age difference increases as both parties age.

examples:

16 year old guy + 26 year old woman = not seen as respectable by many
26 year old + 36 year old = no problem
30 year old + 40 year old = no problem
20 year old + 35 year old = no problem
20 year old + 40 year old = seen as borderline respectable by many
18 year old + 40 year old = not seen as respectable by many

funny how this works out.

Well, anfrey, you bring up another discriminatory point - society in general winks at older man/younger woman pairings, but groans and pukes at older woman/younger man pairings. Double standard, IMO.

Since I seemed to have turned this into a thread-stopper, LOL - I was 17, the spouse was 28. It can and does work from time to time... LMAO!

some people would've labeled him a pedophile. as i said earlier, respectable is in the eye of the beholder... and beauty is in the eye of the beer holder...
