My little brother, who's on my family plan, wanted to change his number. All he wanted to do was switch to a local area code and see if he could keep the rest of the number. Since we're in Chicago, there are a few (2 city, 3 suburb) area codes to pick from and I thought there might be a chance we could keep his seven digits. So I called T-Mobile customer service to see what was available. Before I finished my explanation, the CS rep told me that they can't do "vanity numbers" and that basically they pick a number at random for you. After a few "Oh... really?"s from me, I said okay, whatever. She went over the details, explained how you have to setup a new voicemail account, etc. I said yeah, sure, assuming I would get to decide if I liked the number or not before it went through. About a split second later, my brother got a "Welcome to T-Mobile..." message.
And that was that. I was never asked if the number was okay, it just went through. Seriously, you can't even ask if a particular number is available? Just curious if anyone out there knows if this is the case with all carriers or even all T-Mo CS reps.
