Verizon Told to Sell Assets Before Merger
Holdings in 22 states must be dealt before government approves Alltel deal
Verizon told to sell assets before merger - U.S. business (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27461411/)
I know that Sprint is in a bit of financial trouble, but since Verizon needs to sell some of its assets in 22 states BEFORE the merger with Alltel will be approved, do you think Sprint will buy up some assets (hopefully some spectrum, towers, etc) to expand its native network? With only 2 major CDMA carriers in the U.S. (excluding Alltel), it's only logical that Sprint would be interested in buying some of Verizon's CDMA assets...

i doubt it since Sprint just sold all of their towers to TowerCo for $675 million a couple months ago.
but these concessions arent about hardware... it's about markets. anyone can buy-in simply to take part of the market away from Verizon to prevent them from monopolizing an area. it's what at&t did in Vermont as part of this merger deal; at&t acquired part of alltel's holdings in VT as required by the FCC's merger prequals to prevent VZW from being the only carrier in VT.
prior to the merger, alltel and VZW were the only major carriers in VT. the deal would have made VZ the only carrier in VT, so at&t came in and bought up what VZW was forced to surrender.

The merger was approved on Nov. 4th, they just have to divest some of Alltel's markets before Dec. 12th.

Oh, the joys of modern competition. :D
Have any of you noticed that in the Alltel commercials (featuring Chad) the Verizon guy says nothing anymore?
