iPhone facts from the first reviews

Well, the first reviews are in. But you may have missed some of the more interesting factoids unearthed by the trio of gadget reporters deigned worthy by El Jobso to get a pre-launch iPhone. Here's a few fresh n' interesting iPhone facts right off the presses:
* The mobile version of OS X or whatever it is the iPhone runs takes up 700MB of the device's capacity. Damn son!
* There's no way to cut, copy, or paste text! WHOA! Big, big mistake.
* No A2DP support. That, friends, is such a huge bummer right there.
* Sorry, music can't be used as a ringtone -- even if it's just a raw MP3. No additional ringtones will be sold at launch.
* On a PC the iPhone syncs with Outlook for calendars AND addresses! Noice.
* It supports Exchange in some capacity, according to Walt, but he doesn't exactly say how.
* Pogue again confirms document file reading -- but not editing -- for PDF, Word, and Excel (only).
* Adobe Flash support is officially out. It's just not in the browser. Neither is there any other kind of embedded video support. Sorry everybody, that's that.
* It will take snaps, but won't record video. How can Apple love YouTube as much as it does and not realize cellphone-shot movies make up a sizeable chunk of the crazy crap you find on there?
More after the break!
* Oh, and no MMS. And sorry, no voice dialing, either.
* Contact groups can't be emailed as contact lists.
* Apple sez between 300-400 charges the iPhone will lose battery capacity -- you'll send it in and get the cell replaced for a fee. Meh. We knew this would be the case, but still, meh.
* Apple can (and supposedly will) be rolling out periodic updates -- no surprise there.
* Battery life is, somehow, almost as mind-blowingly good as Apple claims for calls, music, and movies.
* As we suspected, users are prompted with lists of WiFi networks if you're not nearby a trusted hotspot. We've seen this on other phones, and we're afraid this would get friggin annoying.
* It's said to be very scratch resistant. The facade both front and rear apparently just doesn't pick up marring like regular iPods do.
* Voice quality is said to be good -- not great.
Anything else we missed from in there?

I already know that
yes, the new at&t store on Broadway, near J&R has iPhone poster, but it doesn't look that glamorious, compared with T-Mobile 1000 N/W poster at J&R

This man confirm that the device is slow on EDGE, and that you can't put a SIM card in the phone:

EDGE can provide 300kbps at best (class 32)
usually it's about over 100kbps, that's it

The iPhone seems so locked down, that it goes against all the things I like about GSM. It's not that they don't think we can change out a battery, but they want the ongoing revenue from the thing! If they really wanted ongoing revenue, they should have built-in 3G capability and the ability to download iTunes songs and videos through the 3G network.
I can pick up a video iPod with much more storage and a great T-Mobile phone for less than the $600 for the 8GB iPhone.

I wonder if they are putting a SIM card from AT&T in the phone when bought, and locking it down then. I still want to know how they plan on blocking the SIM card.

Another thing that potential iPhone owners need to consider is that at&t is not going to allow insurance to be added to their account when they purchase this handset.

These people are making me laugh by bidding on ebay for people to hold their spot in line, or to pick up a device. That picking up the device is stupid since that person will have to get a contract extension.

I'm going to be sitting at home watching my local news on June 29th, at 6pm....... I'm willing to bet that the lines for the iPhone are going to make the American Idol audition lines look like the lines at the amusement park on a hot summer day.

I heard a review of the iPhone on NPR this morning. I don't remember the reviewer's name. I can find that later when I can turn on my computer. One of his biggest complaints was the dreadfully slow web browsing. He said it made him long for a 56k modem. Perhaps it is because they are relying on edge data for the full web browser. Too bad that users can't install Opera Mini! The reviewer also complained about AT&T's network, but we all know about those complaints. In fact, he said that one of the biggest problems with the phone was Apple's partnership with AT&T. He stated that although AT&T claims to have improved its coverage, he found the coverage to be disappointing.

It was probably Dvorak or David Pogue.
I was listening to NPR this morning and they were interviewing a New York Times technology writer. I was really annoyed because he focused on all the benefits of the iPhone. Honestly, if you are going to review a phone, don't be one-sided.

except you have very good EDGE modem, and the network is well-tuned (like in NYC), browsing is like a nightmare
I am the few lucky, that I can get 200kbps tethered with K790a through bt

by all estimations, the iPhone is all iSmoke and iMirrors, no real iSubstance. Great for the average Joe that doesnt mind spending too much for too little, but wants to look cool to other people who have zero tech appreciation/understanding. Besides, my iPod video battery is over before the movie I want to watch is, just imagine how horrendous this battery life will be:rolleyes:

Despite not being a great phone, it has done some good things I think. We never get the really good high end phones in the US imo, and we always get everything last. Now some of the manufacturers see they lost huge opportunity by doing that and will work harder for our dollars. You can see the change in attitude already. Also it has introduced some nifty features that will trickle into other phones. We will see better phones in the pipeline aimed at us in the future I think w/ more aggressive release dates b/c this is just the first batch of iphones, and more are to come (soon probably)

A guy at the bar on Saturday night was displaying/playing with his iPhone so everyone would see. After I told him to CTFO about letting me handle it, he understood I wasn't going to break it. The screen is gorgeous, but I found it overly gimmicky. He got a bunch of girls around him, but apparently they truly just wanted to see the phone, not talk to him.

Haha...once he had the girls present, he should have not relied on the phone to keep their interest level up.

I don't think we can slate the iPhone because of its network connection, thats AT&Ts pesky fault. :)
Although, I was surprised to learn that it doesn't shoot video at all, it doesn't let you share media via bluetooth either. The implementation of the Bluetooth is for headsets, although it isn't wireless bluetooth (A2DP) compatible either so you many have to consign those fancy wireless headphones to the back of the closet. You can't swap photos, contacts or tunes via bluetooth.
Another niggle is multitasking.
On most high-end phones you can browse the internet while at the same time listening to your favourite tunes on the phone, as well as use MSN etc.
Switching between these functions is easy but to access these functions on the iPhone you have to start from the Home Page each time and navigate back and forth right through the menus. If you put a foot wrong you have to start over again, which is a pain in the ass.
Internet browsing is great but it needs a high-speed data connection. Not being able to purchase music on the go is another disadvantage.
Wow I didn't know that the iPhone doesn't allow you to record video. That's pathetic.

Every phone would be destroyed from that kind of force...it just might not look as brutal. Actually, the fact that the screen still functioned (to what extent I don't know) is a testament to the build quality. Not only would my Dash screen be cracked/smashed, the screen would be black and unusable.
Still, I hate Apple. :p
