3G in Birmingham, AL???

Hi everyone!I was just trying to find an answer to a question I had about 3G connectivity, and stumbled across this site. First impression: kinda surprised at the amount of posts of people trying to sell new phones! I hope I can find an answer to my question, though--t-mobile cust service wasn't any help. My question is this--do I need a different sim card to achieve 3G speeds? I bought a phone that is capable, but t-mobile told me I had to buy one of THEIR 3G capable phones to receive the faster connectivity. Does anyone out there happen to know? Thanks!After reading a few of the posts, it seems like there is a possibility that 3G connectivity may not even be in my area yet. Is there a map or anything posted anywhere that I might check? They should have 3g in Birmingham, AL by the end of the year using one of the t-mobile 3g phones.

Is it possible that a phone won't work at all if it does not support a 64k sim card or that an old phone won't support a 3g sim card? Do the sim cards have to do anything with the phone??
