My friend ordered 2 x Motorola RAZR V3m's (one Red, one Stone Gray) for his 2 lines, and was extremely disappointed with the battery life (and ultimately with CDMA/Sprint). He would not be able to go 1 day with minimal talking (approximately an hour of talk time, no data or texting) before needing to recharge (usually after about 12 hours it would already show the "low battery" warning). I had already set his phones' power management settings to the most aggressive settings, yet that had little effect.:rocketeer::cussing::angry:

So before having him return the phones and cancelling with Sprint, I offered to research his problem for him and to try and solve it (I felt sort of responsible since I was the one that referred him to Sprint to begin with). :scared0016:

In my search, I found out that the MAIN culprit for poor Motorola RAZR V3m CDMA battery life was EVDO. Apparently, if the phone is outside an EVDO area, it will continuously search for an EVDO signal, thus wearing down the battery rapidly (which is especially noticeable with the V3m's puny battery). (And theoretically, even IF the phone was inside an EVDO area, transferring data at EVDO-speeds takes more power than 1X-speeds.) :detective:

I researched some more and found out that Verizon's Motorola V3m CDMA models also had the exact same battery life complaints as Sprint's. Also, a few pages offered solutions on how to DISABLE EVDO on the Verizon Motorola V3m, with numerous posters lauding how well their V3m works now AFTER the hack. However, I didn't find ANY information on how to disable EVDO on Sprint's Motorola V3m, UNTIL I found this... :lightbulb:

HOW TO DISABLE EVDO ON SPRINT'S MOTOROLA V3M (RED OR STONE GRAY):

hey there.

as you may or may not have seen, there is a guide on this site (for the verizon razr) to disable EVDO in the claim that it might help extend your battery life...

well! im pretty sure i just figured out how to disable EVDO for the Sprint razr

but i need your help to see if it actually does help with battery life.. my friend has complained about his sprint razrs battery life, so yeah hopefully this will help everyone.

How to find your MSL code

Run MSU (Motorola Software Update) and keep it running

Run the p2k seem editer program from the downloads section

(if it does not say Connected in the bottom left hand corner, something is wrong and this will not work)

type in -- Seem: 0055

click load from phone

and there you have your 6 digit MSL code

how to use the MSL code to disable EVDO

on your phone, press ##DATA# quickly, or it may not activate the power vision programming menu...

scroll down to option 9. EVDO and click OK

scroll down to option 2. Edit and click OK

Enter your MSL code that you just retrieved

scroll down to option 2. Mode Pref and click OK

select the radio button for CDMA and click OK

click the BACK button on your phone 3 times, and your phone will now reset and the changes should take place.

So yeah! give this a try, and please post back and let me know if this worked for you... im going to start making a section of this site dedicated just to sprint razr owners, so this is one piece of the puzzle that we're trying to build :)

how to disable evdo, and possibly save battery life... | HACK THE RAZR (http://hacktherazr.com/forum/how-disable-evdo-and-possibly-save-battery-life)

Now, not everyone is so technically inclined to hack their V3m to find their "MSL Code", nor did I have the time or software to do this for my friend. So a workaround (YMMV) is to call Sprint, and ask them for the "MSL Code" for your phone(s). (I know the success of this "workaround" depends on what kind of rep you get, but it worked for me on my first try, and possibly will work for you too!) ;)

All in all, from start to finish the hack took 2 minutes on each phone, and now my friend LOVES his Motorola RAZR V3m (even more than his GSM one before). It's been 48 hours since he first charged his V3m, and the battery meter now is only down to 2/3 bars. At this rate, his phone can probably last 5-6 days (on the same exact battery that was previously giving him 12-hour battery life) before he NEEDS to recharge his phone again! :celebration:

Of course, every "hack" has a downside, (in this case all his data usage will be forced to 1X speeds instead of EVDO), but to him that is a non-issue since he doesn't use any data at all. His phones can still connect to the data network, so he can still download updates to his phones if needed (as well as applications, ringtones, screen savers, wallpapers, pictures, surf the web, etc), but everything will be done at 1X-speeds now.

Since it took me a very long time to find this specific hack (after hours of searching, I could only find one mention of it thanks to "styol"), I am posting it here so that it may help other Sprint Motorola RAZR V3m users that are disappointed about their battery life. I know there are other ways to deal with the poor battery life (like recharging more often, or buy the thicker extended battery and battery door cover), but for my friend those were unacceptable options. If you choose to use this hack, please note that I am NOT responsible for any problems/issues/effects that this tip may or may not have on your phone, nor the effects it may or may not have on your phone's warranty! Please use this information at your own risk, and good luck! :th_dblthumb2:

PROS:
+ Potentially will extend your Sprint Motorola RAZR V3m battery life significantly (ie: 12 hours to 5-6 days)!

CONS:
- Must hack phone yourself (follow the instructions exactly!).
- All data will be transferred at 1X-speed instead of EVDO-speed (although in some Sprint and roaming areas, EVDO isn't even available!).

What do you mean exactly when you say "press ##DATA# quickly"?

Nothing comes up if I press ## then push the corresponding numbers to DATA and then # again.

It should on the V3m (and with Sprint firmware). You need to do it quickly, otherwise it won't work.
