it's really simple. first, you need an audio editing program. i recommend Audacity as it is free and open source. you can get audacity at Audacity: Free Audio Editor and Recorder (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/)

basically, what you're going to do is select 25 seconds or less and trim it. then you can adjust the volume (i currently do trial & error on this until i find the loudest a song can be without sounding distorted) and then having the song fade out at the end...

Audacity is a wonderful tool because it's FREE and it works perfectly. Plus, it works on Apple OS X!

ToneThis is Free - MP3 Ringtones, Wallpapers, Videos | Ringtone Maker (http://www.tonethis.com) is another good programme for creating ringtones.

audacity is a great app, and under linux u can run it via wine and still benifit from it. i like it because it supports plugins and 3rd party encoders etc...

almost forgot, you have to make sure the bitrate is set correctly when u encode ur mp3`s, my fone can play up to 128 bit, but for ringtones it needs to be at most a 64bit or it wont show up as a ringtone at all. for the extra little bits of space i just use a 56 bit.
