Does anyone have the Verizon FiOS service? If you do, how do you like it?

Its not available yet here in NYC, since Cablevision and Time Warner have a contract with the city, and they don't want Verizon to offer the service since it will open up competition.

I want to try FiOS TV, and internet.

I can't wait until it comes to my area! I would like to get it. I know that they are advertising a lot now.

terryjohnson16

I have heard that they are working on it here in NJ. I guess it is not anywhere near me or I would have heard about it more.

My nieghbour has it for Xbox only. I sometimes hop on it (wifi). It's still not as fast as my Comcast.

It is not as fast as Comcast?? I heard that it would be the fastest internet around!

terryjohnson16

I think where Cablevision is, Verizon can't touch yet, since these monopoly cable companies are trying to block Verizon since they find them as a threat. Plus the city has to approve Verizon coming in.

What do you mean by 12 mb? 12 mbps? All of the kb, kbs, kbps, and mbps confuse me. Sorry.

Its 12MBytes per second which is faster since thats Fiber Optics.

So can 12 MB be downloaded in a second??

Its too complicated to explain. Here is Verizon's explanation:

Comcast has Fiber Optics??

Yes, and so does Cablevision, and Time warner. Thats how they can offer so many features and services, and also clear tv signal.

I've had Verizon's FIOS phone and Internet service for over a year now here in PA. I just converted over to a wireless router yesterday, when I needed a second computer set up in my house..... Now my kids can go to their "Webkinz" website while I'm posting here at the same time.... All I can say is Verizon FIOS is much faster than my old Comcast service.

the ad shows a guy with color bugs flying around, and the cable users said something against it
geez, I want that FIOS, that I can host FTP

FIOS is ten times faster than Cable IMO. The highest package that they offer is currently 50M/5M. Cable can't even compete with speeds of that magnitude......I'm currently on their 5M/2M service plan. I usually am able to eek out faster speeds than that except for certain times during the day.
I love the service. I have had it for over a year now, and it has only went out one time during the year due to a really bad storm, in which we also lost our Cable TV too.

Can you post the internet speed results from Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test (http://www.speedtest.net) ?

My friend went to someone's house that has FiOS. I didn't know that they install a big huge white box in the house that sticks on the wall. That thing is huge.

These are my results, but I don't know if it's that accurate or not. I'm in PA and the closest server they gave me to choose from was in NY!
Does anyone know if these speeds are good for a package of 5/2?

Wow! That is a lot better than mine. I am in NJ and chose the NY server.

My box isn't that big at all. And the Verizon tech that installed it for us, mounted it on the corner of a wall in the garage so nobody including us even notices that it is there.

I hate how that they have to install it. Why can't they just do it like with DSL where you just plug the modem into the phone line and your done.

I like the way mine was done. We don't have any wires at all connecting our second computer, and the main one that is used by me has only a blue wire, and a smaller white wire that runs under the carpet so nobody notices it...

Terry, I really think the neatness of the job and how well they are able to hide certain things, depends on the knowledge of the installer who comes out to your house....I have read about some pretty bad jobs that were done on some of the customers houses, and luckily I'm not one of them.

The trouble with the speedtests is that there is a good chance your FIOS is faster than the server delivering the speedtest.

I wish I could get FIOS. I think 50mbs is just a start, as the service starts to pay off for the carriers, they'll expand the speeds. Remember when cable was 1.5mbs and cost a fortune?

I'd pick 5M/2M, the outstream is way too fast for basic UMTS, maybe 3.6 HSDPA can match

if T-Mobile can utilize VFiOS, this'll be win-win scenario

Just as an average user, I'm happy with this package. It only cost us $29.99/month. Comcast wouldn't even match this price for us. I could get the 10M/2M package for $34.99, but that seems to fast for my needs at this time.

I don't see much difference after 3Mbps
maybe latency?!
