TmoNews Nokia 7376 headed our way (http://tmonews.com/2008/05/nokia-7376-headed-our-way/)

With T-mobile’s release of 3G, a lot of concern has surfaced regarding the lack of handsets that support T-mobile’s AWS 3G bands. Well add the 7376 to that short list of 3G enabled handsets. Sporting 1700/2100 IV, this baby should easily be able to pick up T-mobile’s UMTS, and in the future, HSDPA.

Sightings of the 7376 have popped up on a few different site, such as page six of this large PDF and TEMS news. More news to come soon. Enjoy!

Thanks Marco and Matt

I didn't say you said I wanted the phone, its just that you said quote on quote "Ugg, give me a good PDA phone with 3G access and we'll call it good." Like I was posting some super high end phone or something that was supposed to interest you or something, and the only reason I posted it cause its T-Mobile news, and that is kind of what these forums are for. I didn't post it and say, "do you like this phone?" or "do you want it?", it was only supposed to be of interest to comment if you actually wanted the phone or found it appealing.:p

30 dollars sounds a bit too little. I am sure you can get a new one for no more than 140 dollars however.

The Nokia 7376 is now available on eBay for about 30.00USD a piece for what appears to be a sample that resets every five minutes.
http://members.cox.net/tzsm98/7376/opnflip.jpghttp://members.cox.net/tzsm98/7376/back.jpg
It does have a camera, with flash on the back.
http://members.cox.net/tzsm98/7376/OPNBK.jpg
The mini-USB port is on the top of the phone, as is the 2.5mm AV port.
http://members.cox.net/tzsm98/7376/top.jpg
It sports the typical small Nokia charge port on the left of the device. The on/off button is to the left side and is small, brass affair, very unlike any I've ever seen on a Nokia.

Here's a quick run down. I've had the device out of the wraps for a day now. With no FCC ID apparent I've taken out my SIM and haven't made a call. It got full bars for the few minutes it was on the network. T-zones operated perfectly at EDGE speeds. I could not download ringtones, games nor wallpapers. The device is not supported as it was never adopted by T-Mobile and has been cancelled from all appearances.

The camera's maximum setting is 1526 x 2048. Video resolution is VGA. Some blockiness even at best quality. Maximum clip length without a microSD card inserted is 10 seconds.
It comes with the themes you'd expect to see on the 6133. S40 stuff and T-Mobile all the way.
The keys feel like chicklets but are flat.

The interior LCD is about the same size as the 6133. My guess is the 6133 LCD module is the same part number on this phone because the exterior LCD is also identical. Ain't mass production and having a solid parts bin grand? I'm wondering if the ports above the LCD on the right side are light sensors rather than imaging sensors. The menus have no mention of an inside camera and an ambient light sensor would make sense to extend battery liife on a device with a flash for the camera.
The phone is squared off, similar to the N75 with a matte finish that defies fingerprints.

The microSD slot is under the battery cover and not pretty. The battery is a BP-5M
A very discreet top mounted slide releases the battery cover. The battery cover also covers the lens and flash. The battery cover lifts off rather than slides off. There are two ears at the bottom that have to be positioned first and then the cover swings down and is secured by the latch at the top of the device.
The example I have is running RM-220 v.03.36 firmware dated 16-11-06. Here's the interesting piece. The model designation is 6280.
http://members.cox.net/tzsm98/7376/0000.jpg
The IMEI label in the battery compartment does not state it is a prototype. This states RM-220 but has no model designation on the label.
http://members.cox.net/tzsm98/7376/rm-220b.jpg
[I]Battery compartment label with IMEI obscured

The SIM holder is concealed below the microSD holder. There is a nifty little slide mechanism that ejects the SIM about 85-90%. This is a huge improvement over the N75 arrangement that was spring loaded and had a catch and would, from time to time fail. If you removed the battery the SIM would come flying out. This requires affirmative action on the part of the user to have the SIM removed.

UMTS, GSM and Dual are the network choices in the menu. In the UMTS setting the tower icon is replaced with a 3G icon where the 3 is on top of the G. In Oklahoma City the full bars are replaced by a blank space.

So, why all of this space for a cancelled device?
Whatever its failings might have been the RM-220 had a lot of potential. The high resolution camera, the 30 megabytes of user memory I failed to mention above, VGA video, 3G, IrDA, apparently solid construction, proven S40 platform, all of this still makes sense in today's market. Look at the 6301b. It has 30 megabytes of user memory a lesser camera and substitutes UMA for the 3G. It runs on S40. The RM-220, if they replace the IrDA with a UMA chip would rock their market. It has a fingerprint proof finish, music, radio - why not bring "Son of 7376" to market?

I think you are right about that being a camera above the LCD. The top circle appears to be a "view finder" aka vanity mirror. No doubt they were testing something other than the camera function on this hoss. We'll never know ...

Here is an interesting tidbit about this device I received from Nokia.

"according to the IMEI number of your Nokia device, your Nokia 7376 is manufactured for Denmark. Nokia 7376 has not been released in the United States."

This confirms the model number for me. Something that up until now I had been taking on faith since it is not represented on the device and the firmware was showing a different model number.

Why a Danish market device would have 1700/2100 Band IV, as this is supposed to have, is a mystery to me. There was no mention that this device was a prototype, engineering sample, or anything other than it was manufactured for Denmark.

Next stop - www.nokia.dk (http://www.nokia.dk)!

The trip to nokia.dk was a good move! the 7376 is "Son of 7390" aka RM-140. This is a triband GSM / 2100MHz WCDMA device. A search for 7390 on the Nokia Europe - Welcome to Nokia Europe (http://www.europe.nokia.com) site will yield the support pages. Download the user guide and look at the images. Page 11 of the user guide could have come directly from a guide for the 7376.
http://members.cox.net/tzsm98/7376/page11.jpg

The 7390 was part of the L'Amour Collection. Pink phones with leather accents and cloth tag were a highlight of this collection. Go to the link below for the full treatment. It certainly explains the brass tipped hardware. Once you see the image of the open device the parentage is undeniable. No DNA testing required here. Right down to the send and end buttons the keypads are a good match for each other.

47mm x 90mm x 19mm are the dimensions of the 7390. There is no reason to assume the 7376 would be any different. I'm not into measuring but one of the photos posted above does have a ruler on the right side so you can count the tick marks.

Nokia Danmark - 3D demo - Nokia 7390 - Produkter - Find produkter (http://www.nokia.dk/A4670044)

Now the only mystery is why T-Mobile canceled this device when it came from what appears to be a proven platform. I'm hoping we can get something more than the usual "it didn't fit our business plan" that corporations like to feed the public.

If you are a collector of the unusual this might be something of interest. If you are looking for a work-a-day mobile phone this will not be for you.

It turns off without any sort of orderly shut down routine at five minutes.
There is no access to the inner camera
There is no FCC approval so you would be using an unapproved device on the network
Having said that, if it goes for under $20.00, it is a fun toy for playing around with when bored. I have mine sitting on my desk. I use it as a camera. It is a 3.15 megapixel camera with flash. Also, if you have a beatup looking 7390 it is a cheap way of getting a pristine case to re-case the 7390. Of course you lose all the L'Amour looking stuff and it very plain, sort of a 7390 run through the Shaker School of Design.

The seller of 7376 phones on eBay, and at the moment there is only one, is reliable and an excellent communicator. It isn't me.
