check out this 3G phone from the UK!
i just picked one up, and can probably say im one of 5 owners in the whole US who has one, seeing they are stricktly UK phones, but i got my hands on one thanks to a good friend in London, I use this WITH T-Mobile! and the 3G works pretty amazingly, i must say has 2 gigs of memory and a 2 MP camera.. the LED external display is the best thing though!

It supports 3G where ever 3G is available, these phones were made for T-mobile over in the UK with 3G so here they will work rightaway
i love how the UK has better phones and better tech then we do, meaning they are more ahead than we are..
I am sorry and it's personal, but this thing is ugly.

I believe that UK 3G frequencies are different from T-Mobile USA 3G frequencies. So they won't be operating at 3G speeds when used here in the U.S.

Exactly, the 3G frequencies are different from the UK and US. Even the 1700 stuff is different and incompatible. So I just don't see how the 3G works...if it does that's great...

the 3G works on different Bands, this phone is a Quad Band phone, and supports 3G here and there, after digging into it a little bit more, it seems that T-mobile uses the Exact same 3G they use there, as they will use here, hence it being released there first.
This phone is going to be pretty sick, in my eyes, if anyone can find me reads, that prove me wrong please provide them, im all about learning, and have no problem admitting loss, or anything like that, but just with the research i have done, it seems that i WILL work here as well.

The term "Quad band phone" applies to 2G frequencies for GSM of 850,900,1800,and 1900.
According to this website:
O2 Cocoon - Full phone specifications (http://www.gsmarena.com/o2_cocoon-2002.php)
The cocoon is UMTS 2100 which is used in Europe.
The downlink frequency of European phones are in the same band as T-Mobile USA is using. However the uplink frequency is not the same. That is why the phone won't work on T-Mobile USA's 3G network.
Here's an article which explains more details about why the 3G phones used in Europe will not be compatible here with T-Mobile:

^^^ AHH nice find my friend, they state the 3G download link will be the SAME, it's the upload link that is off so yeah that might be the only downside, but it looks like T-Mo is trying to fight that and get it to be the same, because they won't A. have alot of happy customers and B. unlocked phones won't do so hot, unless they don't use the 3G and just stick with whatever they have now, with the tri band stuffs

Where are you seeing that T-Mobile is trying to fight the difference in the up and down-link?
Because it would be nice to be able to procure phones from sources other than T-Mobile (what's the point of GSM otherwise...) and have all features work.

in that article it said something to the effect that tmobile wasn't happy about pretty much getting the shaft and having to use a new channel for 3G that no one else will be on pretty much, least thats what i gathered, read that 2 days ago so it's not fresh in my mind, but still depending on what they do between now and when it hits here, we shall see, i'd still be able to use the phone which is good, just maybe not for 3g, but who cares... a phone is a phone.. if i can call and make calls then thats all i care about.

No. Quad band just means exactly what it says, 4 different bands/frequencies. It has nothing to do with 2G or 3G. The new phones coming out are Quad band HSDPA...meaning it works on 4 different hsdpa frequencies.......

The Cocoon is NOT a Quad band HSDPA. I already posted the link to its specs:
O2 Cocoon - Full phone specifications (http://www.gsmarena.com/o2_cocoon-2002.php)
The Cocoon clearly has one UMTS frequency (2100), not the 4 HSDPA frequencies you claim.
As I made clear to the original poster who said the phone was a quad band, I said it is only a 2G quad band phone. This is also shown in the specs. It is not a 3G quad band phone.
If you dispute the specs of this phone, you should post what you think are the correct specs.

be aware HTC Diamond
by engadgetmobile, it'll have quad-HSDPA 7.2
if so, it's about time, 3G is active now, at least in NYC

You are correct, the uplink band is what makes the European phones incompatible with T-Mobile USA new 3G network.
The uplink frequency used in Europe was not available in the U.S. So T-Mobile had to go with the 1700.
Once the network is up and running across the country, I expect the manufacturers to add that frequency to their new phones.
In the meantime, you are correct, unlocked GSM phones like the Cocoon can still be used on the 2G network with no problem.

yes that was what i was getting at more or less, same down differen up, so IF we ever get the same uplink, then i'd be able to use my phone on the 3G network, does anyone ever really see that as being likely? or no?

I don't think that I would hold my breath waiting for it. I'm not sure what is occupying that frequency in the US though.
Emergency Broadcast System. This is only a test.
Just kidding. :D
