I assume that you are already familiar with the 8120. Have you had a chance to use or see the Dash as well?
Basically, the best thing one can do when contemplating a new decision on what to get (no matter what that item is) is just to try the options out and see what is going to work for you.

Personally, I'm more familiar with Windows Mobile style devices (though more of the professional version than the standard issue) so I can't really say that I wouldn't use a BB. In fact I would like to try the Pearl, but if I were to go with a BB it would have to be the Curve because I need a full qwerty keypad (or the 9000, but it's not out yet....).

I've tend to like the Blackberry OS compared to the Windows Mobile OS.
First of all, just memory usage of the two phones are on two different levels. With the Windows Mobile devices, expect to see lag while going through the menu after a couple of months. The whole interface takes up a lot of memory when running, making the phone run slow in general (i.e. - T-Mobile Wing). But the OS itself is very easy to get acquainted with in the beginning.
As for the Blackberries, because the menu is icon-based, not as much resources are used, making it generally faster than the Windows Mobile devices. As well as that, program management is definite plus. At any time, you can run multiple applications and close any of them to free up memory for smoothing out the processes of other apps. But if you take pictures and store lots of music onto the phone's memory, expect same annoying load times while accessing those. I strongly recommend getting a MicroSD memory card to store all that data.
And of course, between the Dash and the 8120, keyboard is different. SureType is going to take a bit to get used to if you're going from T9. Not that it's so different that you'll get confused, but just letter placement on the keyboard made me opt for the full QWERTY keyboard the Curve (8320) over the Pearl (8100/8120). So definitely go into a store so you can and test out how you like texting on the two keyboards. That's my best advice in terms of phone purchasing: If you can test out the phone first-hand, do it. :D

The Dash is definately a fine device. I have owned it since the first week of it's release and have not had any real complaints. The MP3 ringtones I have created and used sometimes force you to use the outdoor ringtone volume wherever you are to hear them, and I don't use the volume strip since it is more trouble than it's worth. But in the area where I live I have yet to see anyone else who owns one and that is a plus for me since it feels like I own a unique device. I even go to the crackberry.com site to download some of my ringtones and wallpapers.
I am however ready to upgrade to a new device and even with the Dash 2 coming out soon with double the processor speed, I will most likely go to the Blackberry Curve because I like the rollerball control and would like to try something different. I will say that between the Dash and the Pearl the main difference is the Dash is wider and thinner, while the Pearl is not as wide but is a thicker device so you hand size and the feel may be important. My Dash can easily operated with either one or two hands, but when I tested the Pearl it was not comfortable using as a two handed device.:D
