Nextel made its name by letting construction crews, taxi drivers and others connect instantly with colleagues at the push of a button. Dan Hesse, Sprint’s CEO, believes that button can be just as powerful today.
For Sprint customers. A new technology will provide that same high-performance walkie-talkie service to a series of phones running on the Sprint portion of the Sprint Nextel wireless network. The company moved forward Thursday with a launch of two Sanyo phones offering Nextel Direct Connect walkie-talkie power thanks to what is known as QChat technology developed by Qualcomm. The Sanyo Pro-200 and the Sanyo Pro-700 are available to large business customers through the company’s direct sales teams in Kansas and Colorado.
These will join the phones already available -- as well as more on the way -- that run on the Nextel portion of the network. Sprint executives see great demand among consumers for these phones, which will offer the near-instantaneous walkie-talkie connections as well as access to the Internet and other data services over Sprint’s higher-speed wireless network.
