Verizon Wireless is planning to compete with Sprint Nextel in the business oriented push-to-talk market.

Jack Plating, the wireless company’s chief operating officer, told Bloomberg News the company will use technology similar to the QChat push-to-talk service being rolled out by Sprint in some cities. QChat is the follow-on to Nextel’s legacy push-to-talk service.
Sprint said Tuesday the company will begin offering two handsets with QChat later this month. Four additional handsets are expected this summer.

Plating didn’t say when Verizon Wireless would begin offering the service.
“There’s about 19 million subscribers there that are important to us,” Plating said, referring to Sprint’s Nextel subscriber base.
