Starting April 7, T-Mobile Germany will drop the price of its lower-tier iPhone to $156, from $628. The newer, 16 GB version retains its $784, price tag.

The move to discount the cheaper iPhone may be driven by two factors.

Apple Inc. is widely expected to launch a 3G version of its handset (http://www.rcrnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080402/FREE/127369752&SearchID=73313643345472) this year perhaps as early as May-June. Analysts have also said that the European market for high-end phones (http://www.rcrnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080314/SUB/353430385&SearchID=73313643443346) this spring is cooling and a dramatic cut in the 8 GB iPhone could also address slow overall sales.

Analysts will closely watch Nokia Corp.’s April 17 earnings report for signs of weakness in global handset sales. The Finnish company has forecast handset market growth at 10% this year, but most analysts’ estimates range from a gloomy 4% to a conservative 9%.

Apple has set a global goal of selling 10 million units from its June 29 launch last year to the end of this year.

The duration of T-Mobile’s sale could bolster the speculation that the 3G iPhone is imminent. The sale, which requires a two-year contract with minimum monthly tariffs of $46, will last from April 7 until June 30. The minimum monthly plan is the cheapest of four promotional plans and comes with tight limits on “free” voice minutes and data usage.

EDGE is not hot as 3G in Europe and Asia, esp HSDPA is pretty popular over there, and most of the countries run on single 2100 (850 and 900 in few countries)
however, 3G will become popular in American countries in the next 2-3 years once NA1700 becomes 3G and LTE standard
there're still alot of GSM carriers in American continent are unable to run 3G because spectrum problem, NA1700 will give them chance

My question is what are the chances of success for a non 3G iPhone in a very well set up 3G network. Also the German special characters are missing from the iPhone.

The 8GB goes for 99 Euro, the 16GB for 499 with a new 2 year contract.
Too bad the conversion rate is so bad.

That is so true. I just can't see the Germans putting down 800 dullah when they have other great phones to choose from.
