Verizon Wireless: Now it’s 20 cents per text message

Verizon Wireless will follow Sprint Nextel Corp.’s lead in bumping text messaging rates from 15 cents to 20 cents per message.

The carrier is informing postpaid subscribers that the cost for domestic text messages will be increased in March; messaging rates for prepaid users will remain unchanged at 2 cents to 10 cents per message, depending on the plan. The move mirrors Sprint Nextel’s rate hike (http://www.rcrnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070821/SUB/70821005), which took effect three months ago.

Verizon is using the increase to push its messaging bundles. The carrier offers 500 text and picture messages plus unlimited in-network messaging for $10 a month; 5,000 messages plus unlimited in-network messaging is available for $20 a month.

The moves are notable as Verizon Wireless and the rest of the nation’s major carriers increased their text messaging rates from 10 cents to 15 cents starting in 2006. (http://www.rcrnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061016/SUB/610160701)

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if someone tries to use this as an easy excuse to take Verizon Wireless to court.

Even if they do, we'll just wind up with another V710 fiasco...

Gee, a whole $25 if I resign my contract another 2 years? Thanks! </sarcasm>

Not that switching would matter... Verizon hiking their rates means in a few months every single carrier will have their text rates at 20 cents. This is ridiculous, why do text messaging rates keep going up? Does it really cost all that much money to send a small little 1kb message or whatever it is? It's ridiculous that I have to pay for a small text messaging plan in fears that I will be texted a few dozen times one month, while another month I get nothing.

Anyhoo, my point? This ain't just sticking with Verizon... it's going nationwide

Actually the wireless business is becoming less profitable as the companies keep battleing with prices for voice plans. Text message is the most profitable this for wuireless carriers so they keep hiking up the price to make up for what they are discounting in the voice plans. it sux but its business.
