A few weeks ago, AT&T quietly gobbled up a sizable chunk 700MHz licenses from Aloha Partners, the largest owner of 700MHz spectrum in the United States.

So i'm not quite sure what this means? New iphones are going to have 700 built in and att is going to buy even more spectrum in the upcoming auction?

It would kind of go hand-in-hand with reports of a 3G iPhone coming out next summer...if that's the freq they are using for 3G, which I'm pretty sure they are.

AT&T is currently using the 1900MHz spectrum for their 3G network. It sounds like the 700MHz spectrum will be faster in terms of broadband speeds, and also give better indoor coverage to their customers. I gave up on the 3G phones that I had due to poor 3G signal quality. If they do switch over to the 700MHz spectrum, and the reviews are good for the handsets, I just might get another 3G handset with them again.

I wonder if T-Mobile will be bidding on that 700MHz spectrum.

The next iphone won't use the 700MHz band for 3G. Heck, no one will use the 700MHz band next year for cellular services, since that spectrum won't be free to use until mid-late 2009 once analog TV signal can no longer be used.

This is not going to be an 'easy' transition.

So, so far At&t is going to be bidding on the spectrum a lot...do we know who else?
