I thought I'd help kick this new forum off by posting some info about Edge Wireless (AT&T Affiliate), they are the ONLY GSM carrier here in Mendocino County in Northwestern California as well as in Lake, Humboldt, Del Norte, Trinity, Siskiyou, Modoc, Lassen and Plumas Counties in NorCal, in addition they serve Southern Oregon, Southeastern Idaho and Southwestern Wyoming (Jackson, Afton, Alpine, Thayne). They provide GSM/GPRS/EDGE and are just starting to turn up HSPDA-3G.

I also have a a discussion group over at Yahoo! about Edge Wireless-

Maybe we could make this a sticky, and do something similar for other regional and local carriers :)

How long has Edge wireless been around for?

They have been around since 1999. Here is some Wiki info on Edge Wireless that I found. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edge_Wireless

Who We Are
In the fall of 1999, Wayne Perry, Cal Cannon and Donnie Castleman formed Edge Wireless with the intent to build a state-of-the-art wireless PCS system

All those guys are ex-AT&T Wireless Exec's by the way.

We might still be without GSM service if they had not built out, AT&T and T-Mobile do have licenses to serve this area but have never built out their networks, the same goes for Sprint, Nextel and Metro PCS. We are currently served by three carriers, Edge Wireless, US Cellular and Verizon.

even though they are an affiliate of att do you think it is possible for another wireless carrier to buy them out? I.E. T-Mobile

If AT&T doesn't own them, I think it would be possible. I am not sure though.

I know that there is a T-Mobile Affiliate, but I don't think they are owned by T-Mobile.

EDIT: i wireless is headquartered in Urbandale, Iowa, and is a partnership between T-Mobile USA and Iowa Network Services (INS).

So I am guessing that it is the same for EDGE Wireless.

While it is a partnership between AT&T and Edge, and AT&T has a 40% interest in Edge Wireless, the other 60% is privately held (headed by three ex-AT&T Wireless Exec's by the way). While a company could buy them out, as far as I know they have no plans to sell, they pride themselves on bringing big city technology to rural areas and small towns, something the big guys don't seem to care much about. That's why Edge started service in 1999, to bring advanced technoligies to areas that for the most part didn't have it, and areas like mine might still be without GSM if they hadn't have come in.

Edit-I live where Edge Wireless provides the GSM, and have studied up on them extensively, so fire away on the questions! Edge started off as an AT&T Wireless Affiliate in 1999, then changed to a Cingular Affiliate with the buyout, and now is an AT&T Affiliate again. Also, when they started in 1999 they were TDMA, but turned up GSM in 2003, they stopped selling TDMA a while ago and officially stopped supporting it this summer.

So T-mobile roams off of EDGE wireless?? I'm assuming they get data right? I heard they are letting AT&t customers roam off their 3G network...anyone know if this is true or not

Yep, T-Mobile roams on them, as does AT&T and many other companies. Data works fine on Edge with T-Mobile, but I don't know if T-Mobile will allow 3G data roaming on them, you will need a phone that does 3G on 1900, that is where all of Edge's service is.

Edge is starting to turn up 3G, I know it's up in parts of SE ID and S OR, and AT&T users can use it. Edge hasn't turned their 3G up here in NorCal yet, but it should be soon.
