okay........so where does Tmo stand right now? i mean they havent really marketed any EDGE service anywhere...........at least not around the greater philly area here...........and how is the UMTS buildout coming along?.............i know they started the buildout in New York before they even got the spectrum at the FCC auction because they were so certain that they would get it...........they are allowed to turn it on now but does anyone know when they will turn it on and where they currently have it prepared.......

also what handsets are in R&D cuz i know that frequencies that Tmo is licensed to do UMTS on are tweaked to be more like European frequencies so they needed new hanndsets...........does anyone know which companies are working on these..........i would assume Nokia........i think that is what Tmo said

also............how is Tmos @Home service doing...........when are they going to take it ou of testing and put it on the market..??? anxious to see that

1. T-mobile@home is supposed to be released within the month. It was also supposed to be released last month, and the month before, so many users are just sitting and waiting for it now. It is already out in the Seattle area, but we are still pending on a national release. I'm guessing if it is not within this month, it will be within the next 2 months. I don't know what they are doing...I really am getting sick of waiting.

2. T-mobile...I don't think...has advertised EDGE once. I am doubting they will advertise their UMTS services too much either, as it sounds like they are using the 1700/2100 spectrum to improve coverage, reception, and voice quality more then provide 3G services such as TV.

3. From sources on T-mobileSignal, it sounds like T-mobile has 3G ready in many or most areas, but the government has just still not cleared the frequencies. They need to be out by the end of the year, but T-mobile is ready with 3G. I am sure they are fighting to get the frequencies open sooner.

4. Very little is known about T3 (T-mobile 3G) handsets, but as of now we know that Nokia will be supplying some.

Hope I helped answer your questions.

very informative response.......

1. I think if i remember correctly they said that they were doing a sort of beta testing in Seattle so I don't thin that they have officially released it yet.

2. They do have more frequencies now. They originally said that they would have 3G online by the end of '08 which means I will be switching back to T-Mobile.......now here is the weird thing if any of you can make sense of it........my friend got an insert in her Tmo bill that said that T-Mobile Video or something like that was coming to our area......that puts an interesting twist on things unless they are planning to support a video service on EDGE which i highly doubt as possible......i mean the CDMA companies are still mastering it on EV-DO Rev A

3. covered mostly in 2

4. again i agree that in the original press releases i believe Tmo said that they would use Nokia as their primary manufacturer in the beginning but im sure other companies will be putting their bid in quickly

If you could Scan, or take a picture of the insert your friend got, that would be a huge help. I haven't seen it around, so if we're the first one to put it up, that'd be awesome. I highly doubt, as you said, that T-mobile will launch anything involving video on the existing EDGE network they have now.

There isn't really much to add on what he said. While I know I am the source of some of that information this has been summed up quite well.

T-mobile in ALL of our recent trainings where 3g has become a question that is usually asked first has said consistently that the emphasis is not on 3g capable services but expanding the quality of the network. The money right now is in the quality of the network, T-mobile has a high enough data arpu, comparable to that of the major players without having all the extras. They are in fact going to do this right. They will make it a plan to show that T-mobile is serious about bring their customers the very best in services and offerings while slowly but surely unloading various "extras."

TV and things of that nature are surely coming and I've seen no indication to the contrary that various data capable services are not coming. Unlike the other big 3 they will not be rushed and not be a focus.

I think its safe to say that T-mobile will maintain its marketing focus on showing improvements, in home quality with UMA etc than emphasizing various intangibles like TV services a la Verizon's vcast.

Sounds like a plan. No biggie if you can't get it, but it would just be really great to have. Thanks!

that does sound like a plan and if you look at the whole picture..........getting customers and creating a good image for themself is what matters first but i think knowing that T-Mobile will eventually introduce important 3G services might sawy me between staying with my Sprint SERO plan and upgrading or switching back to Tmo when my contract expires in November of '08............i did like Tmo very much but Sprint is givin me a very good deal on my plan........

I heard it on radio from internet
broadband penetration in USA is pretty poor, worse than Asian countries
if T-Mobile has confidence to handle massive HSDPA/HSUPA traffic, advertise T-Mobile as ISP is also a good idea (damn the home area, the ONLY broadband ISP is Verizon DSL, and it's getting slow now)
I'm gonna use T3 HSDPA as part of home internet service in the future, won't replace homeDSL, but will be used as backup when homeDSL gets too slow

you've got to remember that Verizon is coming out with their FiOS service and while they do focus on new developments to introduce it...they do make attampts wherever possible to upgrade current VZ networks cuz they want to destroy the old DSL<Cable stereotype............they can do this with FiOS

but anyway back to topic............the fact still remains that the important thing for T-Mobile to gain is customers and maybe one of the only ways to do that is to show customers those services.........wow them if you will.........that will make them talk about how great their company is to other people.............i was on another forum and one person made a very intelligent statement by saying that the best weapon a company can ever have is its customers............one of the best ways that a compay can increase its customer base is by getting current customers to talk about how great their company is...........T-Mobile already accomplishes this with low prices, good value, excellent customer care, now they can do it by giving the consumer arena all the features that AT&T has promised the nation.............that will wow the world and the increase in customers will be a positive after-effect

I live in the PA suburbs, and TMobile does have EDGE available around the areas that I've gone to........I would much rather see TMobile spend money on the roll out of their 3G network now anyway, due to the increased data speeds that will come with it.

i agree............at this point...........an EDGE buildout is a waste of money and all financial support from DT should be put into UMTS

EDGE is still practical where UMTS/HSDPA is not available
don't forget, it's difficult to deploy 100% 3G in US, because there's too much rural area, and 3G coverage is not good as 2G, even 1900
this is not cost-effective to deploy 3G in a town with only 1000 residents
other than 3G, T-Mobile may also deploy 2.85G (EDGE2, which has near 1Mbps) where 3G deployment is not cost effective

hmmm.........never heard of 2.85G..........you learn something new every day...........but T-Mobile has said that they will have UMTS on all of their towers by the end of 2008..............and judging by the size of their home network i believe them...........and maybe they can just rely on the 1900 and 850 roaming to by 2G and 2.85G

According to antennasearch.com, T-Mobile has a construction permit to build a new tower within a few blocks away from my house. The permit dates Nov. 8, 2006 (coincidence... the day I started service with T-Mobile). I wonder if the new tower is for their 3G deployment. I wouldn't mind it they added 2G coverage with the tower, as compass shows only one bar of coverage in my neighborhood. I do get coverage in my house without problems, even with "one bar" of coverage.

this is a next 2G technology developed by Ericsson
GSM still have room to develop

It would be nice if T-Mobile would have interent for desktop/laptop computers that would use the cell towers. I think a lot of people would get it, if they get good coverage at home.

yes but laptop internet is so much more expensive than the Broadband alternatives like DSL and Cable...........the only reason someone would need to use that would be if DSL is unavailable and Cable is weak............i knew someone who's cable company had to zigzag a cable down a mountain and it severely diminished the signal...........Satellite internet and cellular internet might be the only option then someone might resort to the prices of the cell phone company to get broadband........but......in metro areas where DSL and Cable are widely available..........Satellite and cellular are unneeded

If T-Mobile would have a good price for it... I see that the T-Mobile Internet plans are expensive.
