8320 curve problems

seems like none of my 3rd party apps work, such as opera mini when i installed that it said no internet connection. google maps doesnt work, stops installing a 4%, windows search doesnt download i always get a failed download when i try. and NONE of my IM clients, (AIM,MSN, yahoo) none of them work, something about address books..can anyone help?

All of those applications work just fine on my curve... call tech support they might neeed to send u a replacement

As far as the opera min, make sure your APN on Options/Advanced/TCP connections is: wap.voicestream.com

My Curve decided to help time fly. The issues is that it gains an extra minute about every two minutes. So after hours of tech time patching, upgrading, and complete rewrites of the e software, we came to the conclusion it was hardware related.

I am thinking of getting a Curve also but no data plan with T-Mobile. I inted to use it with thw wifi at work and home. So are you saying that unless you get a data plan with T-Mobile you cannot use the Curve wifi?

You should be able to use WiFi without the data plan. I use a curve with a data plan, but turned my mobile radio off and simply turned my WiFi on, and I was able to not only jump online, but make calls on WiFi (keep in mind that you need the H@H add-on for unlimited call, otherwise it comes out of minutes). I don't see why you would have any issues without the data plan either. One thing to ask for when you get the Curve, is the BB Feature Enabler so that you can still do MMS and such without requiring the data add-on.

I experienced the same nightmare and expended 3 hours on the phone with RIM technical support. The basic problem as related to my dilemma was that the operating system had to be reinstalled via the Desktop Manager. This process was repeated several times and finally was successful in installing third party software.
My recommendation is that you reinstall the operating system and determine if this solution resolves the issue.

I have had the Curve for two weeks ....with no data plan...just using wifi....everything works fine...you need to make sure your browser is set to Wi-fi Browser not T-zones...and you need to call t-mobile and make sure they add the "Blackberry enabler plan" onto your account...it is FREE...but it is what makes your phone work for MMS..SMS...Wifi...Etc.

I had similar problems with mine (got it last night), though I didn't have any problems with my IM programs, but GoogleMaps just didn't get past 4 (which actually is 40%).

I solved the problem by updating to Curve Version 4.2.2.180 which can be downloaded at T-Mobile from the My.T-Mobile.com Site then everything was fine...though I haven't tried installing Opera Mini yet...but GoogleMaps is kick ass! :)

Quick Tip: One of the easiest ways to solve most hardware or software problems, especially on mobile devices is to check in this order Provider Website, Provider Forums, Manufacturer Support Site , Manufacturer Support Forums, Google It! Might save you a butt load of hurt on hold for many hours. By "Support Site" I mean downloads, manuals and the like. I have found over the recent past years that this is a really solid procedure for solving nasty problems quickly without having to talk to a useless level 1 or 2 Technician on Phone Support or worse yet waiting on hold forever to get a Level 3 Tech (engineer) or even worse a "Call Back" from one of these knobs!

As a side note. If you are on a Mac you will need to have, borrow or steal a Windows XP or Vista (God Help You, because no else will :) )machine to install the update. They (RIM) as of yet have not coded an installer that works in OS X, in fact the Desktop was coded by PocketMac subsidized by RIM...makes sense, but sad as they are not going out of their way to support OS X (which is a super polished version of FreeBSD on Steroids) directly in this update which mean no direct support for ANYTHING but Windows...understandable, but short sighted for such a large corporation with so many resources...any way, I digress

The good news is if you have an intel based Macintosh you can use BootCamp to boot straight into Windows and run the installer, works like a champ...saved my ass :)

Parallels doesn't work for this as the "Sandbox" doesn't allow the installer to access the USB bus which the Device Update needs to properly update your Curve without killing it!
If you have Parallels, the best method for using it (if you have the space) is to have BootCamp install Windows on a separate partition, and point Parallels to the partition so you can use it in Parallels mode when you don't need it to talk directly to hardware and boot directly into it to play games and update hardware device like your BlackBerry Curve, PDA or what ever.

P.S. is it just me or does GoogleMaps only work on the EDGE network...It seems to ignore my Wifi Connection, but BlackBerry Maps seems to use my Wifi when it's available .... hmmm anybody else notice that?

Even with 4.2.2.180 you still can not run Opera Mini without having the BB data plan. Is this correct? I believe that Google Maps will run on straight wi-fi without the data plan.

I do not have the data plan...and I am using Opera Mini 4 Beta 3 running ovver wifi just fine.

Hey folks,

So I got my Curve yesterday and have been playing with it for some time. Thank you all for your tips. So far I have to say I love the device - physically it is a great size and weight and although it is my first BB device, I have to say the trackball design is awesome. Could have done with a faster processor but it has wifi which is what I got it for anyways.

I dont have a data plan with T-Mobile, I do have the Blackberry Feature Enabler turned on and I intend to use the device to access the Internet via WiFi at home and at most places I am at.

I did upgrade to 4.2.2.180 but still running into problems. So I have a few questions:
1. Did you guys install Google Maps as standalone or as part of the Google Services pack?
2. When I installed the standalone Google Map application (by going to google.com/maps I think), I got version 1.6.4. I always get the "stuck at 4" error with this.
3. When I installed the services pack - Google Maps and Gmail complain about not being able to access the network (i.e. cant find a data connection.)

My sense is that the services pack installation is getting along farther but that the Google services are not getting their connection off the WiFi. Is there a configuration for this? I have looked nearly everywhere in the menus but am unable to locate one. In any case any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

I am also thinking of installing Opera Mini. Does that require any config to access the data connection over WiFi?

I am happy to report that today is my first day without the data plan and my apps are working over my home wifi connection.
I guess gettign the data plan somehow enables them to work over WiFi also. Check out the thread above and this should solve the "stuck at 4" problem also.
