uClinux (Linux Variant) on Danger Hiptop Wireless Organizer (http://www.ecst.csuchico.edu/~borisov/linux.html)
found this link from google, where a dude that now works for danger, has put linux as the os on a sidekick, thought this was pretty kool, i always wondered if this could be done, and boom it has... i never messed with this other than booting from linux off my sk3`s sdcard, but this guy actually had linux as the os on his sk... theres files and how-to`s on how to do it urself, but it would be very risky, especially if you dont know what you are doing. I just posted this for proof of concept, and outta intrest... DONT GO OUT AND DO THIS!!! THIS GUY KNOWS WHAT HE WAS DOING, IF YOU DO THIS AND SCREW UP YOUR FONE, DONT COME WHINING TO ME OR THIS GUY ETC...!!!!!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED OF THE DANGERS OF BRICKING YOUR FONE!!!!!!! now have a good day :p

Just what I thought... it's for the very first Sidekick.
Sidekicks are very hard to hack into.
He did it when he was not working for Sidekicks.
Now he does.

yeah i guess i should have worded the topic original sidekick to be a little bit more clearer, but i figured everyone woud have understyood cause sidekick is the oriiginal one... anyways i know what ya mean about them being hard to hack into, i been googling alot to get ideas on writing my own apps for the sk3 and came across this page, i have a great ide for an app now, i just have to get started, then im gonna submit it for my dev key to see if i get approval etc... iu think the sk3 and above has so much potential ya know, i wonder if you could use the sdcard to store the os on and boot with a bootloader like grub or lilo etc to actually run the sk from then??? that would be pretty nifty ya know then no sk hacking would really be involved other than the bootloader...ya know just having the choice is what i think alot of ppl would really like then ya know... im wondering if an os like LynxOS would work? its what nasa was partially using for their guidence control systems on their ultralite unmanned drones etc... i ordered a copy off the net a few yrs ago and its a really good development platform and is linux compatible etc...that and the sidekicks sdk might work not sure i never tried anything yet???
FlightLinux - Open Source Linux Operating System for onboard spacecraft use (http://flightlinux.gsfc.nasa.gov/) this is what i was mentioning LynxOS and nasa from, just incase u were wondering...
I'm kinda slowwwww.... but am I to understand that Linux is on the Sidekick? I'm confused. Sorry. :o
I only ask... because I need to tell my brother he can't sell my Sidekick if I can install Linux on it.
I figure this adventure will waste at least 3 days. :)

uClinux (Linux Variant) on Danger Hiptop Wireless Organizer (http://www.ecst.csuchico.edu/~borisov/linux.html)
yeah check out the screenshots and read the info on this link, the guy sucessfully installed linux on the original sidekick, not any of the newer sidekicks like the sk2, sk3, skid etc... its the very first sidekick. this is the quote at the top of the page to that link "This is the status page for uClinux (Linux variant) port to Danger's Hiptop/T-Mobile Sidekick wireless organizer."
you cant go out and buy the new sidekick`s and do this, its for the ORIGINAL ONLY!!!
Hope this makes more sense to ya ? :)

well since I haven't been here in awhile, I figured I'd give this little bit of knowledge of how im running linux on my sidekick3, no hacks required, ya just have to either have a larger sdcard, like 1gig or better in an adapter like the micro sdcard in a mini sd card adapter, as im using, or purchase the terminal client from the downloads catalog. 1st way to do what I've done, (do this at your own risk, if ya don't know what your doing you may screw up your sd card or worse....) I make my own custom slackware linux live cds and play around with other embeded linux... so if ya have no clue don't do...lol anyways, lets take a usb bootable/embeded linux like slax, or dsl, or bt2/3beta etc... I prefer bt3 beta usb/dvd release for on the go with either ausb flash drive or sdcard, what I've done is to extract bt3 beta usb/dvd release onto my micro sdcard, and run the 2 boot scripts within the extracted archive, and now when I hook my sk3 or other fone that can be used as a mass storage device into a computer or laptop etc, I select boot from usb device at boot time, and now it boots up the computer via my fones micro sdcard into a fully working graphical slackware based linux environment, that's easy to do, just carry my usb cable and sk3 around and can boot from most computers and have my custom linux with me at al times.....
the next way is to purchase terminal client from the download catalog for the 9.99 and setup a new ssh session, I use freeshell.org and also my home box(my slack computer) while im on the go, I can dl file via my sk3 to either my free shell account, or directly to my home computer, I can run any cli (command line) apps, do maintanance, start/[top services, play cli games, instant message, yadda yadda yadda etc..... basically I have full control over my home computer via my sk3 fones terminal client. this is all old news really, I think I posted it in another topic, but not word for word??? I don't remember lol... anyways it just makes the fone have more of a use than just to talk with or do simple internet searches, email etc.... ya can actually control your own computer via ur cellfone, that's kinda kool, makes ya feel like james bond or something lol I do it these 2 ways because its more convienient for me as im always on the go. for those that don't know what ssh is, its a secured connection between 2 puters or devices, do a google search for more info on ssh :P I'd recomend using atleast a 1gig minimum, preferably 2gig or better though. that way ya can have a bit of space to work with... lol was funny awhile back tmobile corp kisok was activating my fone and showed them how well the sk fones are, and showed them ssh2 in action and they were like wow how are you doing this, im thinking to myself wow... you should already know how to do this..... then explained it to them, I figured it could help them in their fone sales ya know... the sk fones needs some more notariety other than what we see on tv ya know, I mean ppl in their 20s racing in shopping carts isn't gonna make me wanna buy a sk fone ya know, I'd be more impressed seeing them use the ssh capabilities via the terminal client ya know.... hey maybe I should make a commercial of me in the woods, nothing but my sk3 and terminal client running in da background, by the campfire, posting to this forum..... wait a minute... that's what im actually doing as I write this post..... where's the dam camera man when ya need him....
