MMS stands for Multimedia Messaging Service, its basically what is used anytime you send a picture message, Video Message or and Audio file to another cell phone.

That is pretty much it. If you send any kind of media message it will be an MMS instead of a SMS. Also, MMSs support up to 1024 characters I believe, so if you have to send a really long text message and don't want to get charged $.15 x 10 (number of texts you send) you can spend $.25 and send an MMS.

MMS isn't necessarily used "anytime" you send a picture/video/audio file - email is becoming increasingly commonplace on even low-end phones - but MMS is still "the standard," as it were. When you take a picture and choose "Send" or whatever, your phone will (more than likely) send the snapshot as an MMS. Start a text message, and then decide to "Insert" a video file? Ditto.

I'm not a fan of MMS, which is why I'm glad email-enabled handsets are rendering it obsolete. It's a very closed, proprietary standard - it reminds me of the days when CompuServe charged people per email. And having one inbox that you access from your computer and phone is just nicer.

That's why I don't understand why everyone is freaking out that Apple didn't include MMS on the iPhone. But that's another thread entirely. :)

This is an excellent tip. I never thought to send long texts as an MMS. I send novels as texts sometimes. This will help me out alot and will help me conserve some of my 400 texts.

great info, but MMS are now charged the same as SMS by t-mobile. everything but international messages are $0.15 each - or out of your plan total.

Ohhh yeah, totally forgot about that. Thanks for the correction. I remember from when I was on pre-paid, and then from before I got unlimited messages that it was $.25, but since you said that I remember they changed their prices.

No matter the price. It will surely cure some of the messages that are supposed to be one and then send as 3 or 4 texts.
