I heard from store rep in NYC (42th street store) told me the 3G will be launched in September
however, seeing is believing
except I see any handset announcement, I still have to watch

Please remember that is not T-mobile that is delaying this release. The government still occupies the frequencies that T-mobile purchased in the AWS spectrum. The government does not have plans to completely remove themselves from that spectrum until the end of the year.

I have a good relationship with our resident field technician and he has mentioned to me on numerous occasions that T-mobile is ready to deploy the service. Even to the point that he has alluded that the Towers are even ready to go, they just have to be turned on and tested.

At this point I think its all about the end of the year, I don't think Q3 is a likely scenario at this point.

I believe there are some other ones...man I saw it and thought I put it in my favorites but didn't. It was on a smaller cell-blog but it was definitely a T-mobile branded phone...with 3G. I believe it was a higher end Nokia...anyone know what I'm talking about?
Anyways, Glad you started this thread!

As far as I know no phones have been officially announced and or leaked. Had they been the major blogs certainly would have picked up on it and boygenius certainly would have leaked it. I'm not discounting what others have seen or heard but an announcement of such value wouldn't have been something discovered on a smaller blog.

What you guys might have seen is the UMA phones that are in the pipeline as the service is launching at the end of this month, beginning of July.

terryjohnson16

Yeah, 3G must not be coming anytime soon, since T-Mobile would want to launch some phones to go with its launch. BoyGenius would have seen or heard about some phones for T-Mobile, since he gets the phones that AT&T will launch even before they are officially launched.

I thought T-Mobile has the spectrum, but they are not yet finished in some markets to officially launch it.

T-Mobile USA Secures Rights from FCC for Auctioned Spectrum

BELLEVUE, Wash., Nov. 30, 2006 – T-Mobile USA, Inc. confirms that on Nov. 29, the FCC granted the company 120 spectrum licenses covering the continental United States, Hawaii, Puerto Rico/U.S. Virgin Islands, Alaska and major markets including New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago. The granting of these licenses fulfills T-Mobile’s winning bids during the recent FCC Advanced Wireless Services (AWS) auction.

"T-Mobile is pleased to receive its AWS license grants from the FCC. The agency is to be commended for moving so rapidly to award these licenses,” said Robert Dotson, president and CEO, T-Mobile USA. “I want to thank FCC Chairman Kevin Martin, the FCC Commissioners and the staff of the Wireless Bureau for their successful efforts in making this important spectrum available."

This acquisition of spectrum has doubled T-Mobile’s spectrum position in the top 100 U.S. markets, which will facilitate a planned 2007 commercial rollout of 3G next-generation-network services to enhance core voice services, and deliver applications that will take consumer-based PC functionality mobile.

let's guess which phone will be the first 3G phone upon launch (or months before launch)
I guess it should be nokia 6282, which was supposed to be US version of 6280 (no front cam)
Cingular was supposed to sell, but end up abandoned it
nokia just need to re-program 3G RF from 850/1900 to 1700/1900, and keep 2G intact, and it's ready to go

I am guessing that your area will be in line with the national launch. Chances are T-mobile has all the apparatus set up and ready for deployment, and they are just waiting for the government to clear the frequencies. My best guess from reading everything going around the internet would be before 08'

I think some member can invite this guy, he posted a nokia Nseries model will be available for T3 in selected markets (heh, NYC is one of them, here I come, sorry sonyericsson)
I called the sidekick! Engadget is now showing two new Sidekick's. Boy do I know how to call 'em.

On the N series, a version will be availble from T-Mobile for test marketing purposes in select 3G markets by the end of this year, however it will not ship in time for the launch of T3 and probably will not be a launch phone. Look for some select users around Bellvue carrying the devices. I don't have any other details as of yet but if I get more, you know I'll post them.

Also, the T409 and 6086 will be available from T-Mobile on June 28th. Promos start on July 4th. A special discounted rate will be provided to customers who are early adopters and the price on a two year contract will be $50.00. Routers will also be available for free after rebate, two brands. Just thought you all would like to know, Hotspot at Home is here at last.

TMoUK has 3G phones on pre-paid so there is definitely the possibility.

3G really makes the difference. In the UK they have just finished their TV trial and it will be fully available from 1st July. We have 9 channels available and it cost no more than $2 / day.

Great for dipping into.

Sony Ericsson: Expect More From Us - News and Analysis by PC Magazine (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,2108205,00.asp)

Basically says more phones are on the way.

To support T-Mobile, Sony Ericsson will be developing phones that work on the new 1.7 Ghz "AWS" frequency band that T-Mobile bought quite a lot of last year, the executives said. That makes Sony Ericsson the third manufacturer to mention 1.7 Ghz products to us, after Nokia and i-Mate. They're also producing phones that work with T-Mobile's "MyFaves" interface.

And here are the recently announced phones.

how could i tell for sure what network i was on?i mean 3g or not. the razr i have is released for tmo and cingular only. its a quad band fone, when i serach for networks in the settings it comes up with cingular and tmobile at the same time no matter what sim i insert into it, but it will only connect to the network that the sim belongs to. my cingular sim is a 3g sim though. so i was assuming that when i inserted the cingular sim and the speeds i got, i was on their 3g. when i tethered with it, it was extremly fast kinda like i was on cable modem almost, web pages loaded like snapping my fingers boom they were there. standard tethering i dont get those speeds, all i get is dial up speeds......im checking the networks now and tmob is 310-260 and cingular is 310-410 under available networks, with my tmo sim inserted. im just trying to better understand this is all. though i could have been using enhanced gprs or edge speeds? i didnt think about that? GSMV3xxTMBO1NA14D is my flex im using atm that came with the fone...im still pretty new to gsm fones so please be patient.

I guess its time for 3gamericas.org to get updated, since they said that it was estimated that T-Mobile USA would launch HSDPA in June 2007. Still a no-go. With the Samsung T639 getting the FCC green light, I hope we don't have to wait til December for 3G in the main cities.

3G is basically wireless broadband.

You can obtain much higher speeds with your phone. 1mb and up. Which very nice for PDA type phone users, and people who use their phone as a modem.

at&t
Sprint
Verizon

all have a 3G data network.

you need to read something about UMTS and 3GSM on wikipedia and gsmworld
however, 3G provides more dynamic bandwidth based on connections (like CDMA, that's why UMTS is also called Wideband CDMA)
another profit of 3G is parallel data+voice, that can make/receive calls when internet is active (or use internet channel for video conference, that's why most of international 3G phones also supports video conference)
the downside of 3G is TX power, it's 1/4 as 1800/1900, that may affect reception

Mobile/Cellular Technology - T-Mobile USA 3G Network (http://www.mobilecomms-technology.com/projects/tmobileusa/index.html#tmobileusa1)

T-Mobile USA 3G Network, USA

In November 2006 T-Mobile USA announced the rollout of its first 3G (UMTS) network in the United States. The company is the smallest mobile telecommunications company in the US, although it is one of the major players in the European market. T-Mobile USA is to invest $2.7bn on a 3G network rollout (3G-Plus).

Until October 2006 the company was constrained by a severe shortage of wireless spectrum in the US, which meant inferior reception in many areas and many more network busy signals than its bigger rivals. In the latest Federal Communications Commission (FCC) spectrum auction (auction 66) T-Mobile USA bid $4.2bn to ensure that it was the high bidder for 120 licenses in markets across the US and so would gain use of a usable range of AWS (advanced wireless services) spectrum in the 1.7GHz and 2.1GHz bands for data and voice services. T-Mobile USA has more than doubled its average frequency coverage in the top 100 US markets, from 25.9MHz to 52.2MHz.

The company is deploying UMTS technology for the new network and it expects to start offering 3G services in several markets by mid-2007, to substantially complete rollout by 2008 and finally complete the network by 2009. All of the other US mobile telecommunications are much further ahead with their 3G networks. But as the take up of 3G services in the US is expected to be slow this should not be a problem for T-Mobile.

T-MOBILE USA

T-Mobile USA was known previously as VoiceStream Wireless (formerly a division of Western Wireless but spun off as an independent company in 1999 and then acquired regional GSM carriers Aerial Communications in the Midwest and Omnipoint in the Northeast). In May 2001, VoiceStream and Southern regional carrier Powertel were acquired by Deutsche Telekom for $24bn, and changed to the T-Mobile brand name in September 2002.

T-Mobile USA has its headquarters in Factoria, Bellevue, Washington and is currently the fourth largest mobile wireless carrier in the US market with 23.3 million customers (Q2 2006). T-Mobile USA is preparing for continued strong growth in the American mobile communications market where the current penetration rate of around 73% is considerably lower than in Western European markets. Voice traffic in the US market is expected to continue to grow two or three-fold until 2015.

The mobile data business in the US is also expected to grow considerably and has a long way to go. Mobile data already accounts for around 11% of T-Mobile’s average revenue per user (2Q 2006). The company is well placed to satisfy its Telecom 2010 programme which aims to make the US division the largest single company in the group by 2010.
" T-Mobile USA has more than doubled its average frequency coverage in the top 100 US markets, from 25.9MHz to 52.2MHz."

NETWORK ROLLOUT

T-Mobile has awarded partial contracts to both Nokia and Ericsson to build the 3G network in the US. The company has announced that it will start to rollout the new UMTS-based 3G service in the final quarter of 2006 and most of the work will be completed in 2007 and 2008. T-Mobile USA has budgeted around €2.1bn for this work from 2006 to 2009. The increase in investment by T-Mobile USA in its network infrastructure will be lower, however, because some investments in the existing network can be reduced as the rollout of the new network progresses.

The focus of the 3G rollout will be in the larger population centres and not in the rural areas. Ericsson was selected for its turnkey network rollout and to serve as the prime radio provider for WCDMA (wideband code division multiple access) 3G services in certain markets, including New York City which is scheduled to be operational in 2007. In addition, Ericsson is contracted to deliver a wide array of services including network planning, civil construction, installation, testing and network optimisation. Nokia as its part of the contract is delivering its Nokia Flexi WCDMA Base Station optimised for T-Mobile’s newly acquired AWS spectrum bands.

T-Mobile will be the first US operator to deploy the fully HSDPA capable Nokia Flexi WCDMA Base Station. The small and modular design of the Nokia Flexi WCDMA Base Station enables easy deployment of WCDMA 3G in multiple spectrum bands with significantly lower base station site expenditures and also gives an easy upgrade path to HSDPA for the future.

GSM 850

T-Mobile USA also completed the rollout of its GSM 850 network in 2006, which has boosted its current coverage area by nearly 40%. The biggest benefit of GSM 850 is that the frequency gives increased coverage for less base stations as the 850 signal propagates further than a 1900 signal. The advantages will be seen mainly throughout the central part of the United States. Although the final stages of the rollout also included rural areas of the Northeast and West. Altogether, nearly 400,000 square miles of new coverage has been added during 2005–2006.

WEB 2.0

US mobile telecommunications companies are leading the way to bring second generation internet services to the mobile phone platform. Web 2.0 refers to a series of possible second generation mobile internet-based services that emphasise online collaboration and sharing. Nokia and some of the US telecommunications companies such as Sprint Nextel, along T-Mobile USA, are leading the charge to turn the internet model to the commercial benefit of mobile comms. T-Mobile USA is building a nationwide UMTS system and it has said it will focus its 3G services firmly on Web 2.0 applications such as MySpace and YouTube, as well as data management scenarios and consumer mobile email.

ok, recently call Customer Care and was inquiring about a new phone.

Luckily, I had a rep who likes to talk about things he shouldn't a lot.

He said he recently attended a meeting in which T-Mobile execs said that 3G capable phones will become available starting in september. A vast array of Nokia, SE, Moto, and Samsung phones are in the pipeline to be launched with 3G capablilities at the lauch time, which is expected to be around Dec/Jan. T-Mo has the 3G metwork running in select market areas (New York, Seattle, San Antonio), but is not going to make it available untill 80 of it's total coverage area is 3G ready.

Hey, i'm just delivering the info as I was tild. Any descripancies should be brought up with a T-mo rep.

Found this in the xda-devs forum/Can anyone confirm this info especially about T-Mo waiting on the spectrum it purchased to be vacated before T-Mo will offer us 3g.

I just spoke to a very very knowledgable representative from TMobile USA maybe 10 minutes ago.

I first started asking about the TMobile MDA Vario III (or to most known, the Kaiser... i believe at least). After talking a little we got into quite a deep conversation, the first person from first tier support that wasnt an idiot WOW!

He informed me that he had heard that TMobile USA had purchased the 1700mhz band for their new 3g network. That we would definitely here more about the network this year but that they are waiting (to many stupid US laws...) for all current users to vacate this newly purchased band.

Also he then informed me that anyone that would be either buying a Kaiser from Europe unlocked, or buying an AT&T 8925 (Kaiser) then getting it unlocked would have the likelihood of not having the full potential of their 3g network on their phone. Also stated that when 1700 does become purchased and person currently owning the tmobile mda or the new tmobile wing would not be able to use the 3g networks.

Next he told me about how an htc rep had come into the office not to long ago and talked to him about their (htc) phones. The htc rep informed him that they are currently working on a very very quick phone for TMobile USA, im guessing it is some sort of branch off from the Kaiser, but he had no information exactly about that.

I also asked him about the pricing of the monthly data connection. He said, "well all i know from experience is that when TMobile went from normal data speeds to the EDGE towers, the monthly price stayed the same."

Trying to think about what else.... hmmm. I'm guessing that is it, ask question if you can think about anything else... we talked on the phone for seriously 20-25 minutes... how blackberrys suck, how iphones are overrated and only for fad following cheerleaders lol, just everything.

That rep is right about the current phones not being able to use 3G on the T-Mobile USA upcoming network, since the bands are different. Mostly their new 3G phones will have EDGE too, so the EDGE data part will work, along with 3G if that areas has 3G up and running. He is saying that the phones overseas that T-Mobile UK, and the rest use overseas won't work on the 3G network here since they use the UMTS/HSDPA 2100MHz band. Most phones that T-Mobile will launch for 3G here will have EDGE, and 3G 1700MHz.

If the phones that overseas carriers use for 3G will work here on AT&T since most 3G UMTS/HSDPA phones out now, have the 850/1900MHz 3G band which will work on AT&T. That 2100MHz band won't work here for 3G. That is what he is saying, since some phones like the new Sony Ericsson phones, some Nokias, and other phones have the 3G 2100MHz on it, and that 3G band won't work here.

Any phone that has 850/1900MHz GSM/GPRS/EDGE will work for AT&T and T-Mobile USA for the GSM side.

It would be interesting to see some phones with Quad-band GSM, and Quad-band 3G (850/1700/1900/2100MHz)

I wonder if T-Mobile will use the 3G 1900MHz bands in places with enough spectrum for 3G. I want to see the specs of the upcoming 3G phones. It would be good if they put Quad-band GSM/EDGE, while saying WCDMA 1700/1900MHz.

I personally think the most ideal is
hybrid Hex band (850/900/1700/1800/1900/2100, while 1700 and 2100 are 3G only, there's still possibility 3G exists on 900 and 1800 bands)
850 is also available in Oceania (Australia and NZ)

I just sent out inquiry to support to find out
hope I'll get answer from higher tier TS than "canned" answer
I tried Sprint EV-DO on ratshak
the performance looks great, but not that consistent (600-1800kbps in; 200-300kbps out, with 1xx ms ping)
it looks tempting, but I also consider T-Mobile service is more reliable here, and more responsive CS, and on top of all: GSM/UMTS (faster to change device)

The two bands that this phone has shows it wouldn't go to T-Mobile. WCDMA 850/2100 are two bands that aren't in the states, in fact i believe EngadgetMobile said this phone was destined for Australia

Nokia 6267 hits FCC - Engadget Mobile (http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2007/05/17/nokia-6267-hits-fcc/)

Yep, T-Mobile does have to wait until its vacated before they can use the spectrum. In fact, that band is used by certain government agencies, including the Department of Defense. I believe the government set a date of November of this Year to have it vacated by. I will look for more info and post.

this may be the best thread for nokia 6263 (AWS version of 6267)
FCC documentation
http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/fcc_query.php?gc=QTK&pc=RM-207

6263: The 6263 is a U.S. variant of the 6267 flip. It has quad-band GSM/EDGE radios as well as AWS 1700 MHz WCDMA. This will make it T-Mobile's first 3G phone from Nokia. Features that it will likely carry over from the 6267 are stereo Bluetooth, microSD slot, FM radio and 2 megapixel camera.

Dear Matthew,

Thank you for taking the time to write to T-Mobile. My name is John and
I am here to help you with anything you may need today. It would be my
pleasure to assist you.

Matthew, first of all, I apologize for the delay in responding to your
email due to unexpected high volume of incoming emails to be responded
in sequence.

I am glad to know that you like our services! I understand you would
like to know when T-Mobile will provide UMTS voice and internet, so that
you can make up a plan to get UMTS support phone from us and renew your
contract for few more years. I certainly appreciate your concern about
getting yourself better connected to those who matter to your business
with a 3G phone; I am happy to help you today.

Although we do not know when we will offer the UMTS 3G service at this
time, I believe it will not take much longer before you can find the
service in North America since the 3G phones have already been available
in certain parts of Asia and Europe for some years now!

Matthew, you are our important customer and your concern about the 3G
service is important to us! I will forward your inquiry to the
appropriate department for feedback. I apologize for not being able to
provide you with the 3G service at this time!

If you would like to get an update on our promotional new phones, rate

T-Mobile is so lucky I can't afford AT&T right now. I am reading somethings about AT&Ts upcoming network plans, and I am jealous. The reps are saying that AT&T is pouring money into their network, and most of their own towers are HSUPA capable already, and soon to be turned on in some cities by years end. :( This will be a good time for T-Mobile to forget that UMTS crap, and go into HSDPA. Too bad the network isn't nationwide-ready yet.

the major drawback of at&t is the CS can change customer's value-add service without consent (MEW1 is the best example), and blocking of .hk sites
their laptop connect + voice is $100
if I can get workaround, that Family Share promo + grandfathered internet + any messaging 400 = $75 (save me $25)
T-Mobile is WAY TOO LATE (3-4 years) to jump in 3G bandwagon, but I wish they can skip HSDPA and go straight HSUPA 14.4, this can crush Sprint right away
I personally don't like "stick together" motto, because check the past tense of stick: stuck
we don't want to get stuck with 1989 technology

terryjohnson16
08-30-2007, 08:37 PM
I was thinking about something today. I think that AT&T drops so many calls because they are strapped for spectrum. I don't think that just cause they have the 850/1900MHz bands in most markets matter. The problem with dropped calls is because they are using the same spectrum for both GSM and UMTS/HSDPA. I think that and hope that T-Mobile doesn't have these going from 2G to 3G dropped calls issues when they launch 3G.

I am tired of calling CC and asking them when we will see 3G. They either claim they don't know what 3G is, or they say they haven't heard anything. I mean seriously come on. Its not like this is Hotspot@Home where they are the first to launch the service. I am waiting but I am getting pissed with the stupid secrecy. Heck I can't even call tech support to ask them since I don't have any phone issues. I mean really, this is getting old. Yeah, the t639 is coming out hopefully on Sept. 10th, but even with that doesn't mean NYC will get 3G turned on.

I am sorry, but AT&T is sounding really good at this point in time with their 3G and their phone selections.

Nope, my plan is way to good and I don't feel like bleeding money or dropping calls. 3G is great and yes its getting faster over on the Blue side of things, but in all honesty, do i need 3G everywhere i go, no. EDGE is more than capable for emails, decent web browsing, and so on. Once i have a Curve/Pearl2 (undecided still) then i'll have Wi-Fi, which is faster than any 3G at the moment, from what I've seen/heard. Tethering would be my only need for 3G, but I'm in too many places with Wi-Fi/Hotspots for that to even be a huge concern at all for me. If ATT drastically reduced their prices to something similar to what I have now maybe, but with their current price points and quality issues, no thanks. I'll stay over here on the Magenta side. my 2¢

And it certainly would be a good way for them to acquire more customers, and attract others that are paying much more for 3G as it is with their current carriers. We've got a lot of room to grow, from 26 million to Sprint's 50 mil. Then its ATT and Verizon! Bam, we're comin for you all!

Well the thing is there's no hardware on the market other than that handet tha runs on the 1700mhz rf now att's hsdpa network is on the 850mhz an a bit of 1900mhz so what it boils down to is if your a manufacture this is a pain because tomo is the ONLY north amrican carrier tha uses this frequency rogers(canadian based) an att are using an hsdpa network tha runs on the 850/1900mhz frequency.
Umts is associated with hsdpa nets. But because of tha prticular frequency you would be limited to dual- triband devices an the manufacture would want son serious money because it's a smaller market which means hier msrp. Personally I'm waiting till rim rolls somthing out an waiting for them to release a UMTS usb dongle for my laptop.

 Option is coming out with a Quad band HSDPA device? I hadn't seen any manufacturer advertise any such thing. They usually announce data cards months before we will be able to buy them. If any of them added a 1.7ghz to the existing 2.1ghz all the tri-band cards have, we'd be in business. Even so, the real problem is getting the bands that Tmo won to be freed up. Tmo should charge them money to still be using the bands that Tmo paid good money for.

there're some benefits with 3G
1. better internet, not only faster, the latency is also lower
2. talk and surf, no more missed calls when listening streaming audio
3. better signal over GSM1900, at&t didn't gain this profit because GSM850 is way too strong
4. improved voice quality
5. video conference, but it's not yet enabled

T-Mobile USA, Leap move closer to AWS launches
T-Mobile USA gearing up for New York launch, Leap begins to hire in Las Vegas

By Kelly Hill
Story posted: October 20, 2007 - 5:59 am EDT

Signs are popping up that carriers are getting closer to making use of the spectrum they acquired in the advanced wireless services auction last year.

T-Mobile USA Inc. confirmed that it has begun offering its first 3G handset to customers in New York, although the operator does not plan to launch its UMTS network in that city until the first half of next year.

T-Mobile USA’s sale of the Samsung Corp. SGH-T639 handset ($200 MSRP, $30 with a two-year contract) signals its first foray into 3G. The quad-band handset is also capable of using 1.7 MHz spectrum and will be one of the first handsets to be able to access T-Mobile USA’s planned 3G network, according to the carrier. The T639 received approval from the Federal Communications Commission in July, according to FCC documents.

T-Mobile USA was the biggest bidder in last year’s AWS auction, purchasing 120 licenses for nearly $4.2 billion in order to beef up its spectrum position and support the launch of a 3G network. T-Mobile USA is the only one of the four national carriers that does not have a cellular high-speed data network.

Leap in Las Vegas

Meanwhile, Leap Wireless International Inc. appears to be edging closer to a service launch in Las Vegas. The company’s online coverage maps indicate that the Vegas market is a future coverage area and Leap has posted a variety of job ads seeking employees in the Las Vegas market, including retail managers.

Raymond James analyst Ric Prentiss noted that although Leap has not gone its usual pre-launch route of indicating that a market is “coming soon”—which has typically translated to a launch within three to four weeks—he said that retail sales reps are usually the last to be hired before a launch.

Prentiss said that given Las Vegas’ population growth rate and demographics, the market could be a “very successful market for an unlimited airtime carrier like Leap.”

“We are encouraged that the company does not appear to be running into significant difficulties clearing its AWS spectrum in Las Vegas,” Prentiss added.

Leap spokesman Greg Lund said the company had not broken out Las Vegas and that the market “still fits with the rest of the Auction 66 properties.” The company has said that it plans to begin launching its AWS markets in the first half of 2008. Leap and its bidding partner spent almost $1.1 billion on 100 AWS spectrum licenses.

Lund said that the company was working with the government agencies that have been using the spectrum and incremental progress was being made with spectrum clearing.

Say WHAT?! Wow, I am glad I didn't buy the t639 after reading the line that says: T-Mobile USA Inc. confirmed that it has begun offering its first 3G handset to customers in New York, although the operator does not plan to launch its UMTS network in that city until the first half of next year.

My theory (and it's just that I'm no insider) is they picked whatever major cities the government was vacating first. They just chose whatever was gonna be available.

Being in los angeles, I don't like these rumors on sites about it not starting till q2 2008 and concentrating soley on voice not data at first. This wouldn't make sense as we already have voice on 1.9ghz and will continue to do so. To start out with voice on 1.7 and 2.1ghz in any market would render all current phones useless since we use GSM as voice and quadband phones will all work as it stands. The 1.7ghz and 2.1ghz frequencies are solely for data with 1.7ghz used for the uplink and 2.1ghz for the downlink and this is HSDPA only as GPRS/EDGE uses the same quadband as GSM does.

Well it depends on where you are located. Right now T-mobile has released on 3G phone (The Samsung T639) and has another one slated to be released soon. However, no 3G service is being provided on these phones, but I think releasing the phones is a good start. I also know that some privileged people have been able to test T-mobiles UMTS speeds, so I'm guessing that is a clear sign that it is supposed to come soon. T-mobile is ready to flip the switch...it is all on the slow government's shoulders to vacate the frequency (1700/2100) so T-mobile can use them.

I also know that some privileged people have been able to test T-mobiles UMTS speeds, so I'm guessing that is a clear sign that it is supposed to come soon. T-mobile is ready to flip the switch...it is all on the slow government's shoulders to vacate the frequency (1700/2100) so T-mobile can use them.

duly noted...but at the same time...a lot of the phones that we as consumers know about that are coming out aren't being released with 17/2100 spectrum. Meaning they're not 3G capable. So for us, it still seems logical to think that 3G is still a ways off. Sure, the T639 has 3G, and the Kaiser supposedly has 3G....but that's not known for SURE yet....so really, all we know is there is 1 phone coming out soon that has 3g capabilities. UNLESS T-mobile has a gang of phones ready to be released, just waiting for the gov-ment(lol), to move their lazy behinds up and out. lol

Consider this: T-Mobile had phones with WiFi before they launched Hotspot @ Home, yet they didn't enable it for any of them (a firmware update, in theory, could have done this). UMA has been in the works (http://www.engadget.com/2006/01/04/samsungs-t709-wifi-slider/) for nearly years, unofficial (http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2006/10/24/t-mobile-hotspot-home-finally-launches-in-seattle/) for a year, and official (http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/voip/unconfirmed-t+mobile-hotspot-home-launches-june-27-268626.php) for around 6 months, yet all we have to show for is two low-end (http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/phones/Detail.aspx?device=28c9bfcd-2dac-4604-ab6e-21cc81a459ce) handsets (http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/phones/Detail.aspx?device=93369e8f-a580-49b2-93bd-88fcd1321b85) and the Curve. All I'm saying is that even if existing phones had the chipset to use the new 3G network, it doesn't mean they would. If the 3G rollout goes anything like UMA did, we will see a slow trickle of devices that support the new network.

the t639 is umts, as well as the nokia 6263 that comes out on the 5th(in time for the supposed 6th annoucment of 3g.) also we will have the t739 as a new uma phone on the 12th. All internal documents suggested that the t639 would only use umts for voice services until t-mo decided to unveil its 3g plans(which looks like is going to happen on the 6th.) probably why it was only launched in the 4 select markets. the 6263 is launching nationwide on the 5th in all channels suggesting that the 6th is indeed the day t-mo will light up 3g or at least let us know when it will be turned on. our 6263 demo should be in the store tomorrow or thursday and i will post any info that i can about it.

I'll drop $249 if I found 6263 has 3G icon, and got the speedtest result reflects 3G speed

btw, it looks messed up with Dec 6 3G threads (around 6-7) in hofo

well considering that our inventory is on the way along with the live demo i find that possibility highly unlikely. i have never seen tmo ship inventory and a live demo to the stores and then delay it in the year or so i have been here. Our demo should be in the store tomorrow and i will let you know what i find. its bound to come with a new sim for 3g if the new 64k arent already set up for it.

I was talking to a T-Mo rep today who said that 3G is up and running in the larger markets, NYC, LA, Chicago.
She said it would be nationwide by spring.:D

However she also told me that she thought the Shadow was 3G ready... To her credit, she did check w/someone else before ending the conversation and told me that she was wrong on that.

BTW, getting my Shadow next week!

however, I may get 6263, and sign one more year (though the discount is not that great)
there won't have other AWS phones can draw my attention during Q1 2008

It doesn't work like that. No firmware update will ever make a non 3g chipset 3g capable. Chipsets are hardware limited to what they will work with and I doubt anyone even had the chipsets required for TMO USA's unusual bands when these phones were made. Most still don't as NO other HSDPA implementation on the planet requires both 1.7ghz and 2.1ghz at the same time. It stinks that Tmo had to go this route in the first place. My N95-3 will never be able to do 3G on a TMO USA network which is pretty sad actually. I also have an unlimited TMO data account and none of my hsdpa devices I own will ever work with them in anything other than EDGE, why? Because the chipset's rf companion simply has no 1.7ghz radio capability and no firmware can ever change that. Firmware is still an OS and expecting firmware to make hardware work beyond it's hardwired capability is like having a pc with a cheap basic 2ch soundcard be expected to be turned into an expensive 8 channel card by just updating the os.

TMO doesnt have 3g in the US has nothing to do with TMO. Never before it happened that such a serious DL spectrum issue comes into picture. Normally when FCC auctions certain frequencies it ensures that they get cleared atleast within a year after the auction.
This time they over estimated the defence organizations holding on to 1700 MHz. whic is TMO DL spectrum. These organizations used the FCC ruling that they can take upto 6 years to clear the spectrum citing that they dont have financial and technical resources to move to their newly allocated spectrum.
But good news is that things have been sorted out atleast in NY/NJ area and TMO 3g should be up and running by september 2008.
There is no magic to launch a network of this size overnight so even when the spectrum will become available for other markets it will take 6-9 months to launch it.
The current spectrum clearnace schedule indicates that after NY/NJ it will be los angeles, chicago and miami coming up.

I would love to have TMO 3g service before september but it is very very unlikely. The only possible market for this year is NY/NJ area and it will be launched in phases starting August 25 from manhattan and then covering the whole by end of 2008.
It also depends on the way Ericsson and Nokia work as well. Since Ericsson has been involved in 3g rollouts in US for the last 3 years now so they will meet all their deadlines and there is no such hope from nokia side.
NY/NJ is all set and ready to go with sites ready waiting to go on Air. There is no other city which is even close to this and with increasing costs of T-1 lines to the sites , that process was stopped anyway.
TMO 3g phones are in market anyway and can be easily unlocked using a code to operate on 3g service when it becomes available.
and to GoldStar's question --> I dont think Detroit has any chance of getting 3g in 2009. Its is a second phase nokia market.

They way the government is moving, you would think that would buy T-Mobile some time, and be able to roll out 3G all at once. 3Gamericas.org states that T-Mobile will have HSDPA up by March 2008, and HSUPA by Nov. 2008. Only time will tell. I don't see why they are putting the low UMTS on their new phones, instead of making them HSDPA. They could be playing mind games, and are only putting UMTS to through off AT&T so they won't know what version of 3G they are jumping to.
