I heard a similar news a while ago (phone became a fireball)
and gas stations (at least in military bases) have a warning that the static generates from the phone can cause fire

Ahhh amazing post. I had no idea...and I didn't even know you weren't supposed to use your phone filling up. Now I do
That is really interesting though...If I remember correctly, MythBusters did something similar to this a while ago. I can't remember the outcome though.

they said it was busted but they are wrong about stuff all the time. for example the one they did on blowing up a shotgun barrel. they said it couldnt be done but i have seen it happen .

WOW!!! I don't know about anyone else on here, but after seeing that short clip, I will be turning my phone off from now on while I'm at the pumps.

Maybe you should check out snopes.com since they seem to think that there's no absolute truth to this.

There must be at least some ounce of truth to this. Otherwise I don't think that there would be warning signs on every pump at the gas stations reminding motorists to turn their phones off.

i could see this being a problem with the 3watt phones that people used a long time ago, but 1/2 or 1/4 watt handheld phones are not going to do anything.

sounds like an arbitrary number to me. i've made well over 20 calls at the pump. it's a non-issue
