I'm not big on taking my computer for service to a large corporate environment, I generally prefer the smaller more local shops that provide better service and in my experience generally quicker more efficient service.

I'm a huge fan of the consumerist.com and the horror stories that pour in about geek squad makes me never want to purchase a computer from best buy no matter what kind of a deal is being offered.

Note: this is my opinion as a consumer, not as a moderator.

I don't like the Geek Squad. I think they are expensive.

Taking your computer to GS is about the worst recommendation I've ever heard. Overpriced, plus too many instances of stolen information from customers computers.

I wouldn't have them repair my computer either. I'd prefer to send it back to Dell, and have a professional work on it for me. Knock on wood though, In the 7 years of owning a computer I've never had a problem that couldn't be fixed by going through Dells tech support.

Can we say "Big Brother" ;) the only thing i like about geek squad is their vw bug you can rent from most best buy stores, ya need a credit card to start it up and it deducts funds from ur cc, but i would never rent that car :) looks kool but thats all... they r expensive and i agree with all da previous post... i bet if ya called geek squad and asked them with help on setting up beowulf clusters, theyd be all in the dark... i NEVER take my pc in to a shop... lol i have a reputation to uphold lol just kiddin, but seriously though, ive seen repair shops rip ppl off, mainly the ones who dont know alot about computers, replacing their bad parts with customers pc`s great parts, and reselling the parts they have stolen from the customer. this happens down in arkansas alot where i was at before. i hate seeing ppl getting taken advantage of like that ya know, especially if the customer that is getting ripped off is poor, or a hard working person who doesnt have alot in life ya know...

Other than my laptops, I build my own PC's, no store built desktop's in this man's room! ;) I've been building my own for almost 15 years now.

Edit-Besides, the nearest Best Buy to me is 70 miles south of here in Santa Rosa, so it'd be no good to us.

I hope geek squad keeps their prices the same for a long time. They wanted to charge a lady I work with $200 to install a wireless router in her home, I told her what to buy and did it for $100. I try to do most of my computer repairs but if I can't get it, back to Dell it goes. I have a friend who worked at Best Buy in the GS area and he has told me things about what they do there.

50% less than best buy, but still 50% more than what she should've payed!

Geek Squad now has a competitor... Fire Dog. I wonder how they will do. I know I don't recommend Geek Squad to people.

What the heck... so we can't talk about politics anymore, but we can hawk Geek Squad in open threads? :) This site isn't run by TMS is it? JOKE! EASY! Don't taze me, mods! :)

BTW, didn't these people get in trouble for using shareware like freeware, 'stealing' porn, theft of protected content (e.g., music, TV, movies, software), identify theft, 'destruction' of private property, etcetera?

We encourage topics of all kinds and of every nature however political discussions tend to spiral downhill quickly neglecting the topic and focusing instead of personal attacks on members and their opinions. If there was/is a way to keep them on topic then we support them and will even involve ourselves in them. The staff here at T-mobilesignal is constantly considering ways to improve the forum and we are openly discussing how best to proceed with hot button topics. Give us some time, we're working it out.

Working off of what DJ said, we are allowing political discussion. We are just watching them closely, and holding posts in that thread to high standards. Like at an actual, civilized debate, respectful, informational based arguments are ok, but dissrespect, or just putting down other's opinions etc is not tolerated. We are working to keep T-mobileSignal a friendly environment, and belittling comments is not tolerated. I hope you understand this. We're not trying to be mean, only keep it positive around here.

Back to the topic, I have never used the Geek Squad. I have always been able to fix problems my self, or if all else fails, I will bring my computer into Micro Center and have them just wipe everything out so I can start over.

I typically break and repair my own equipment on a regular basis.:o And on occasion, I have a back-up on-hand, but I still somehow manage to lose at least a few slices of data.

Here's what I was talking about:
The 10 Page Geek Squad Confession - "Stealing Customers' Nudie Pics Was An Easter Egg Hunt" (http://consumerist.com/consumer/the-rollercoaster-ride-of-pride%2C-shame%2C-and-morality/the-10-page-geek-squad-confession-+-stealing-customers-nudie-pics-was-an-easter-egg-hunt-257108.php)

Best Buy: Geek Squad Gouges (http://consumerist.com/consumer/best-buy/geek-squad-gouges-197249.php)

I actually worked as a PC/In-home Tech at Best Buy during the Windows '95 days... While I never saw anything like what's in the included articles, I certainly learned that the only person I ever wanted to touch my computer, is little ol' me.

8 years ago that would be a good suggestion, now its not. Back before bb bought them they were good and only hired quality techs. But when you go from 50 employees (number of geeks pre-buyout) to 5000 you lose quality.

diskzapper is a good app u could use to sanitize ur hard drive when ya start over, saves u from transporting ur puter to another person, also it boots from a floppy or a cd/dvd etc... just a thought/suggestion :)

LMAO, are referring to the Circuit City ad? :DClerk-It City! Heck yeah! Now THAT brings back memories.

They taught me that IT can't solve culture or process challenges. Unfortunately, I'm not sure TMO's Retail leadership grasps this quandary.

I worked for Circuit for a year while in college, and it was the coldest, most snake infested environment I've ever worked in. I'm not saying it wasn't a blast... but DAMN! When people talk about incentives and RSR pay, I certainly know what they mean. ;)

Now, telling husbands to C their way out of an A and B warranty sales pitches because he had child duty and only his wife was receiving my pitch.... CLASSIC!

Charing 5x the price Best Buy does for warranties... uh, innovative?

Setting yourself back a few years during a transformation effort by killing off your top 10%... Perhaps this should be a Mastercard commercial? (TMO USA reference)
