My school has gone over the deep end. Not only can phrases such as "Get low" "Ballin'" "Our game is almost as tight as our spandex" and "Stud. Co." been banned (from talking, posters, shirts, etc) they just banned bananas stating that it was an inappropriate symbol.
Is that legal? They also suspended 30 senior boys for this:
YouTube - Homecoming Pepfest Senior Dance (http://youtube.com/watch?v=5VyFso2BRUc)

Ballin' refers to basketball...the basketball players had it on their signs...had to take it down, and it got banned.
Get Low is part of a song...the softball girls had it on their pants, now its banned
Stud. Co was the Student Council's shirts...now it is banned. The Spandex was for the volleyball players, now that is banned too...I could go on for a while. I'm think that this has gone a little too far for a public school...and if they don't lift the banana ban...or keep baning on anything shaped somewhat inappropriately we're going to try to go to the media, and see if they will run anything on it. What do you guys think?

I graduated Covina High School in 1990 in SoCal, and we didn't have problems like that. I understand the school's reasoning for doing those things, but I agree, it has gotten way out of hand. The only thing I remember the school cracking down on was Raiders stuff, becuase it was associated with gang bangers.

Of course, when we graduated we had a opening and closing prayer, and we said the Pledge of Allegiance every morning in first period, and this was a public school, so this whole thing of banning is foreign to me, we pretty much all got a long fine. I will admit the whole thing of putting words on girls rear ends looks really white trash though, and get low, that's too suggestive to be allowed. I am shocked at what the kids in school now days wear, back in the 80's you would have either been labeled trashy/slutty, been suspended or both, and girls under 13 wearing that sutff, that's just disgusting, and their parents ought to be ashamed.

Edit-Banning Bannana's is pretty stupid though, you might as well ban hot dogs too, I mean, they look like...well, you know ;) Oh, come to think of it other than the Madonna "Boy Toy" look, we didn't have anything as trashy as some of the kids wear now.

Haha it is alright.

So bananas are now unbanned
The senior boys suspension was revoked, so they were now "dismissed" for a day, which means the school excuses the absence, and it doesn't go on transcripts/they can stay in NHS (they were going to be kicked out for being suspended)...however, after looking up the Minnesota law for this, the school is still illegally banning shirts and signs, so I set up a meeting tomorrow with the principle and vice principle to figure this out.

Uh oh...the ****s hit the fan. The media has got wind of all this (that would be from my tip :))
The principle lied on TV...a straight forward lie blaming Student Council for the cancellation of a pep-fest and censorship...we already put together a signature sheet for student council stating they had nothing to do with the cancellation and it was 100% on part of the administration. There are signs around the halls saying "Tiananmen square was also an example of authority breaking up peaceful student protests" (obviously someone took it a little far, but it is a good example of how mad students are at this point)
I'll let you guys know if anything happens. I am recording (with permission) a conversation between me and some of the administration tomorrow. Haha for the little excitement we usually get at my school...this is pretty big.
Anyone have any advice or suggestions? I'm always welcome to help and comments in a situation like this.

Ummmmmmmmmmm... yeah... don't get into TOO much trouble! The way you're posting about the situation now, it's sounding more "serious" and being escalated every day.

IMO, It's ALWAYS good to stand up for what you think is right (and possibly even let other people know about it too), BUT you may want to think about the consequences of your actions. In the "real world", it's always wise to "pick your battles", (and that does NOT mean you should run away from battles you potentially (or absolutely will) lose... that means to figure out how "how much" is "worth it", and how much are you willing to risk in potential consequences).

This is different for everyone, and different in each circumstance. Some people are willing to go all out 100% and risk breaking the law and getting arrested, put in jail, suspended, expelled, or even die for their cause (for example, for the "right" to wear a certain T-shirt to school). Others aren't.

But realize this... unless you are planning to end your education at the level you're at now, your transcripts and other permanent student records are VERY IMPORTANT to the rest of your academic career. What is in there can cause you to be accepted (or rejected) from any and all institutions of higher learning, which WILL have an impact on your future post-grad life (how much, no one can know in the present).

I'm not trying to get you (or anyone else) to be paranoid about their actions, or stop protesting, or anything like that. (I'm PRO bananas btw.) I'm just recommending that you look ahead and think about how your current actions (and actions you are planning) can affect your future. Just something to think about... that's all...

Thank you...I actually used what you said Chokaay, and it worked.
Everyone assumes teenagers are crazy and out of control, and if we don't agree with something we'll just vandalize something (maybe a little too far, but some teachers/parents think we're crazy)

Today I sat down with the principle, vice principle, and athletic director, and talked for about an hour about what is going on. I explained to them how they made the school such as it was Students Vs. the Administration, and that they need to turn it so we're both on the same side. I recommended announcments updating people of new rules/events, maybe TV announcments so we can watch what is happening instead of only hearing about it, and even a blog or e-mail every so often by the principle (he really liked that idea) so people knew what was happening. I also explained that no one feels that strongly about the censorship, but that the more restrictions put on us, the more rebellious we will be...
When I left, it sounded like the restrictions would slowly be loosened up, and about an hour after I left, the principle got on the announcments and just talked for a little bit about everything happening...after that, every definitely settled down and any crazy plans for the homecoming football game tonight were scratched....
Diplomacy worked a lot better then rebellion (peaceful of course...but still)...and I think that is the case in most events like this. I have another meeting next week to discuss the specifics that they banned etc, but overall I'm happy with today.
The funny thing is, the media portrayed our school as dangerous, chaotic, and outright crazy on the news, so everyone thinks our school is rioting or something like that...a ton of media is showing up to the game tonight, it is going to be quite a surprise when we're all well behaved, but I'm glad we can ruin their story for the night because the reporting done on our school was terrible....we used the recording of the story on our school to learn how to not do a story in journalism today.
As of last night, some lawyers were starting to get involved with this, but tonight is definitely looking like it is settling down. Thanks for the advice
