I just thought of something.
Considering it will be years before T-mobile will be able to offer high speed Internet, can't they do the following....
1 - Rent out and use AT&T 3G. I remember that Cingular and T-mobile used to have a contract that they was able to use Cingular towers in some locations whenever T-mobile loose the signal.
2 - Use the TV signals that will be auction off and be available when the tv switch over to digital in 2009.
Will this be possible? Or am I just crazy?

What would happen to the 1700/2100 MHz spectrum T-mobile owns? DT and T-mobile spent $4.3 billion...I can't see a viable option other then using that.
I do agree with you on two however. I think it would have been best if T-mobile waited for the 700 MHz spectrum. Who ever gets the majority of that (if its a cell carrier) will 1. Be broke and 2. Have incredible coverage.
I feel like T-mobile mistake was rushing to get spectrum....but looking at it from their perspective, they 700 MHz auction date was not even set at the time.

I wonder how long it will take to officially clear the 700MHz spectrum.

1- I wish something like this would happen, but since AT&T bought Cingular, there has been very little in market roaming allowed between the 2 since. T-Mobile would pretty much be shooting themselves in the foot if they started using AT&T's 3G service, not to mention AT&T prolly wouldnt be too fond of t-mo users doing so. So, while it is possible, its a very, very long shot that would happen. I called you crazy :naughty:
2- There will be pretty stiff competition for the 700mhz auction, every major carrier is going to be involved. So, if anything, t-mo may pick up some spectrum in places they dont serve (Carolinas, Midwest).

I deleted one because I pretty much agreed with it, but the thing is, are T-mobile's phones, 3 years from now, going to have 700/850/1700/1800/1900/2100 ??
I highly doubt it. I think T-mobile would either have to go all in, or not in at all to the 700 MHz spectrum. I wish they had the 4.3 bil back so they could go all in and get the awesome 700 MHz spectrum, but the truth is I doubt they will do very little with the auction, and if they are involved it will just be to drive the prices up for the other companies.

but freeing up legacy TV service is not easy as you think
currently I upgraded my LocFree to HDTV compliant by buying ATSC DVD recorder
but I found some HD stations are bad in signal quality (no signal error or choppy pictures)
the Sony HDTV is a lot worse, it picks fewer stations than Panasonic recorder
and the legacy stations have no problem on reception
it may take longer time to obsolete legacy TV, it's not easy as you think

currently I don't know how FCC to do with 700
but keep in mind that UMTS requires at least 5+5Mhz, and 10+10 if you want to have decent HSUPA 14.4 service
I bet hybrid hex-band for now
that 3G can share quad-band on 2G on top of 1700 and 2100
there's a possibility some carriers may use 900 and 1800 for 3G if they have enough spectrum
