I just bought a samsung t509 for my mom. She asked me a simple question recently but I'm not sure of the answer. If I call her, does it use up her minutes or no?

It really shouldnt but i would suggest asking the store where you bought the phone from as it really depends on the provider.

Yes, it will use up her minutes. None of T-Mobile's plans, may it be post-paid (contract) or pre-paid, does T-Mobile include free incoming. Now, when you call her (assuming that you have T-Mobile and T-Mobile to T-Mobile on your plan), it won't use your Whatever Minutes, but your mom's minutes will be used at anytime of the day or week regardless of the time since she has pre-paid. If I don't make sense let me know so I can clarify. Glad to help you out! :D

Your mom's minutes will totally be used up no matter if you call her or she calls you. That's just the ****ty part about the prepaid plans. You know, T-Mobile should come out with an emergency phone plan. My grandma would love to find a service that she paid strictly only when she used the phone for emergencies. For example, say she gets a flat tire...she uses her T-Mobile phone and gets charged $1 per minute. Do you think this type of plan would work?

If it's prepaid she'll pay for any and all calls made to her number. If you have mobile-to-mobile on your account it won't cost you anything but it will cost her.

any time she makes/receives a call her minutes will be used. only exception is CS. and the price per minute depends on which refill card was used for the minutes.
1000 refill = $.10/min
400 refill = $.12/min
130 refill = $.19/min
30 refill = $.33/min

Here is how it is cheap enough: $100 gets 1000 minutes, 1 year.

Ma / grandma goes that year and used maybe 1 or 10 or whatever.

You refill it for a $10 card and it works for her for another whole year. You setup her my.tmobile.com, watch it, and top it up. All she needs to do is keep it charged, with her, and turned on. That is what my Ma does. I know of no other service that can match it for low-hassle and economy.

This type of plan already exists - it's call TMO2Go. If you buy a phone kit for $29.99 from Wal-Mart and a $100 card, you will get service for a full year anytime you need it at 10 cents per minute. Any minutes you don't use in that year can be rolled over for another full year with a $10 card added just before the year's expiration date. It's what I use T-Mobile for, and it's the cheapest portable voicemail service/pager I've ever heard of, as well as a decently priced phone for less than 300 minute per month talkers.
