Something has to be done to stop phone companies forcing people into contracts.

I have an old verizon phone I want to move onto their network on my in-laws friends and family plan, they want me to sign a new 2 year contract with a new phone the phone selection was poor, and they only offered a $50 discount for the contract phone. The phone costs about $20 -30 at other outlets but in the verizon store its $70-rebate = $20.

Cant I just sign up buy the phone and go month to month? You would think so, but alas thats not available.

The following seems to be true for all the carriers...
Average usage: less than 1000 minutes
Average data: around 30mb
Average texts: less than 1000.

Now, Average bill: around $112

Yet you can get 1000 minutes, 1000 texts and 30mb of data for $30 with Straight Talk - on the Verizon network, mind you, so this is not some small local carrier. The coverage is truly national and network quality is the best.

So, why are we signing those contracts again?
